The short answer
The best SEO newsletters in 2026 are SEOFOMO for a weekly roundup, the Search Engine Roundtable daily recap for news, Growth Memo for analysis, Core Updates for commented news, and Detailed for research. For AI search, Growth Memo, Lily Ray's newsletter and Marie Haynes' AI News You Can Use go deepest. Most are free.
Every entry below was checked on its own sign-up, about or archive page on 30 September 2026. We quote each publisher's stated frequency and price rather than guessing. Where a page states no frequency, we give the dates of recent issues instead.
Newsletters also matter beyond your own reading. AI engines cite editorial newsletters, and some brands use them to get their story in front of those engines. Our guide to the Substack arbitrage explains how that works and where the rules draw the line.
Key Takeaways
- Thirteen SEO newsletters made the list: three daily, three weekly, four analysis and research, and three specialist picks for news publishers, local search and AI.
- Most are free. Growth Memo and Lily Ray also offer paid plans, and prices are quoted as listed on 30 September 2026.
- Twelve of the thirteen cover AI search or AI Overviews in recent issues or on their sign-up page.
- Four come from software companies: Ahrefs' Digest, Detailed (acquired by Ahrefs in 2025), Search Engine Land (a Semrush trademark) and SparkToro. The list says so next to each.
- You can follow the field in about 30 minutes a week with one daily recap, one weekly roundup and one deep-dive.
- Rankbox doesn't publish a newsletter and isn't on this list. No newsletter paid to appear.
How This List of SEO Newsletters Was Chosen
A newsletter made the list only if it passed five checks on 30 September 2026:
- It's active. A recent issue or dated post was visible, or the publisher sends daily and the site was publishing that week.
- Its own page says what it is. Name, publisher, what it covers and how to subscribe, stated by the publisher.
- It adds something. Original analysis, research, curation with commentary, or specialist depth.
- It covers search as it is now. Recent issues deal with AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search or GEO, or the page says it covers AI.
- Ownership is clear. Where a tool company publishes it, we say so.
A few well-known SEO newsletters were left out because a recent issue date couldn't be confirmed on the publisher's own pages, or because the publisher's site no longer describes a named newsletter. Absence from the list isn't a verdict on quality.

Daily SEO News Newsletters
Daily newsletters tell you what changed. Pick one; three will bury you.
Search Engine Roundtable: Search Forum Recap
Barry Schwartz's Daily Recap emails the day's Search Forum Recap, "a recap of what happened in the search forums today." The archive showed recaps on weekdays in late September 2026. The 29 September recap covered Google testing citation cards at the bottom of AI Overviews and rolling out monitoring in AI Mode. There's also a weekly video recap, "typically 10 minutes or less." No price is listed; the form asks only for an email.
SEJ Today
Search Engine Journal's SEJ Today is billed as "Your Daily SEO & Digital Marketing Newsletter" and "arrives weekday mornings." Its sign-up page headline is "The AI Search & SEO News That Matters." It covers SEO, PPC and content marketing. No price is listed on the page. SEJ sells a separate paid community, SEJ Pro, at $97 a month; that isn't the newsletter.
Search Engine Land
Search Engine Land's newsletter promises "search marketing news and analysis delivered daily" and is "Always Free." The page describes coverage of "the latest developments in search" and AI, from breaking news to buyer's guides and webinars. The same page offers optional promotional lists sent twice a week. Search Engine Land is a Semrush trademark, published by Third Door Media.
Weekly SEO Roundups
Weekly roundups do the filtering for you. If you read only one newsletter, make it one of these.
SEOFOMO
Aleyda Solis writes SEOFOMO, "The Weekly SEO & AI Search News & Updates Newsletter," and "you'll receive an email every Sunday." Each issue lists news, guides, free tools, events and SEO jobs. The issue archive showed issues on 13, 20 and 27 September 2026. The page quotes "+45,000 SEOs subscribed" and states no price; you sign up with an email.
Core Updates
Core Updates by Mark Williams-Cook of Candour offers "weekly SEO updates you need to know about": bullet-pointed news with commentary, his "Unsolicited #SEO tips" from LinkedIn, and the latest Search with Candour podcast. The 21 September 2026 issue covered Google testing payments to publishers for AI search inclusion. No price is listed.
Ahrefs' Digest
Ahrefs' Digest is Ahrefs' "free weekly newsletter, read by 284K SEOs and marketers." It mixes industry news, reads from around the web and new Ahrefs blog posts. Issue #290 on 24 September 2026 led with Google AI ranking factors. It's a vendor newsletter, so expect Ahrefs' own studies alongside the news.
Analysis and Research Newsletters
These don't tell you what happened today. They tell you what it means. Read one every week or two.
Growth Memo
Kevin Indig's Growth Memo "delivers sharp, research-backed insights on SEO, organic growth, and AI-driven search for senior marketing leaders." The free memo went out on Mondays through September 2026, including "The usefulness of attribution for AI Search" on 28 September. Premium costs $15 a month or $150 a year and adds twice-monthly Growth Intelligence Briefs. It runs on Substack.
Detailed
Glen Allsopp's Detailed tracks "how SaaS businesses, agencies, eCommerce stores and media brands are growing with search & AI." Recent posts include "I Tracked 70K+ AI Responses to Measure Their Volatility" (24 September 2026). Subscribing is free. The only stated frequency, "three emails per month (max)," is on an older sign-up page dated May 2023. Detailed announced in September 2025 that it had been acquired by Ahrefs.
SparkToro's Audience Research Newsletter
Rand Fishkin and Amanda Natividad send SparkToro's Audience Research Newsletter "twice a month," promising "under 8 minutes of reading." It covers tactical marketing tips, content and tech news that affects digital marketing. It's free to join, and you don't need to use SparkToro's audience research software, which is what the company sells. The sign-up page doesn't mention AI search, though SparkToro's blog covers AI and zero-click research.
Lily Ray
Lily Ray's newsletter covers "SEO & AI Search." It states no schedule. Recent issues arrived on 13 May, 17 June and 17 August 2026, including "What We Can Learn from Evolving ChatGPT Fan-Out Queries." All posts in the archive were free to read on 30 September; paid support plans are $8 a month or $80 a year.
Specialist SEO Newsletters: News, Local and AI
SEO for Google News
Barry Adams calls SEO for Google News "an irregular newsletter" for "publishers interested in optimising for Google search, Google News and Discover." Issues went out on 9 April, 10 June and 16 September 2026, with a podcast in between. It's free: the publication has no paid plans. News publishers should read every issue.
Near Media
Near Media, from Greg Sterling and Mike Blumenthal, covers local search. Its free tier offers "quasi-monthly updates on the most important developments in local, search, and AI," plus the weekly Near Memo podcast and transcripts. Some news posts are for members only. A 6 August 2026 post discussed survey data on how many AI users rely on AI for local search.
AI News You Can Use
Marie Haynes' newsletter, now titled "AI News You Can Use," is free and covers "the latest industry news on AI & Search." The page says she'll email "when something important happens in Search & AI," while its consent box still describes a weekly newsletter. Her paid community, Search Bar Pro, costs $42 a month or $480 a year and is separate.
The 30-Minute Reading Stack
More newsletters doesn't mean better informed. The 30-Minute Reading Stack caps your weekly reading at half an hour by giving each newsletter a job. The minutes below are our estimates of skim time, except SparkToro's own "under 8 minutes."
| Role | Daily news (5 days) | Weekly roundup | Deep-dive | Minutes per week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-house SEO | Search Forum Recap, 3 min × 5 = 15 | SEOFOMO, 8 | Growth Memo, 7 | 30 |
| Founder or marketer watching AI search | None | Core Updates, 8 | Growth Memo 7 + Lily Ray 2 | 17 |
| News publisher | SEJ Today, 2 min × 5 = 10 | SEOFOMO, 8 | SEO for Google News, 2 | 20 |
| Local business or agency | None | Ahrefs' Digest, 8 | Near Media 2 + SparkToro 4 | 14 |
For newsletters that don't send weekly, divide by the gap between issues. SparkToro's two 8-minute issues a month come to 16 minutes, or about 4 a week. A 12-minute issue every six weeks averages 2 minutes a week.
Three rules keep the stack useful:
- One daily, at most. Daily recaps overlap heavily.
- Unsubscribe after a month of skipping. If you haven't opened an issue in four weeks, it has no job in your stack.
- Turn one idea a week into a test. Reading is only useful if something on your site changes. Our guide to how to measure GEO shows how to tell whether a change worked.
Why SEO Newsletters Matter for AI Search Too
Many of these newsletters are now sources, not just reading. AI engines cite named, dated analysis, and several of the publications above report their own tests of AI Overviews and ChatGPT. If you're learning generative engine optimization, the analysis newsletters are where new studies show up first.
For brands, the lesson runs the other way. A newsletter with a clear beat, a named author and original findings is the kind of source AI answers quote. The Substack arbitrage guide covers how to use that without breaking Google's or Substack's rules.
Where Rankbox Fits
Rankbox doesn't publish a newsletter, and nothing here is sponsored. If your reading turns up a question your buyers ask, Rankbox's Answer-Space Research can check how people ask it in AI engines, and the Citation-Ready Writer drafts a source-backed article on it for your site. For a free start, the AI Visibility Prompt Kit gives you 30 buyer prompts to test by hand. Plans start at $49.50 a month with a 7-day trial. See pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best SEO newsletter?
SEOFOMO is the best single pick for most people: Aleyda Solis sends it every Sunday with the week's SEO and AI search news, guides, tools and jobs. If you want analysis instead of news, Growth Memo is the strongest research-led option, with a free weekly memo.
Are SEO newsletters free?
Most are. All thirteen SEO newsletters on this list have a free way to subscribe. Growth Memo sells Premium at $15 a month or $150 a year, and Lily Ray offers paid support plans at $8 a month, as listed on 30 September 2026. Several pages list no price at all and ask only for an email.
Which SEO newsletters cover AI search and GEO?
Growth Memo, Lily Ray's newsletter and Marie Haynes' AI News You Can Use focus most on AI search. SEOFOMO calls itself an "SEO & AI Search" newsletter, and Core Updates, Detailed and Ahrefs' Digest covered AI Overviews and AI ranking in September 2026 issues.
Is there a daily SEO newsletter?
Yes, three. Search Engine Roundtable emails a daily Search Forum Recap, SEJ Today arrives on weekday mornings, and Search Engine Land sends a free daily newsletter. Pick one, because they cover much of the same news.
How many SEO newsletters should I subscribe to?
Three is enough for most people: one daily recap, one weekly roundup and one analysis newsletter. That takes about 30 minutes a week. Unsubscribe from anything you haven't opened in a month.
Do SEO newsletters help my own SEO?
Reading them doesn't, but acting on them can. Being featured or quoted in one can help too: an independent newsletter that names your brand is a real mention, and AI engines read editorial newsletters. Earn it with original data, not paid placements.
