The short answer

To improve your brand presence in Perplexity, ask it the questions buyers ask about you, check each sentence against the numbered source behind it, and fix the page that source points to. Perplexity writes its answers from pages it cites in plain view. So a wrong price, an old complaint or a rival's verdict usually leads back to a page you can update, answer or outweigh.

Most of those pages aren't yours. In Ahrefs' September 2026 count of the domains Perplexity cited across 3.1 million US queries, Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia alone held 48.7% of the citation share of the top 50 sites. And there is no paid shortcut: Perplexity phased out ads and said in February 2026 that it has no plans to bring them back.

The good news is that Perplexity is the easiest AI engine to audit. Every answer shows numbered citations, and you can highlight a sentence to see the sources behind it. That turns a vague reputation problem into a list of URLs.

This guide covers the branded side of brand presence in Perplexity: what people ask about you by name. You'll get a six-prompt audit, a worked example that traces three bad sentences to their sources, and the fix for each kind of source. For crawlers and rendering, see our Perplexity SEO guide.

Key Takeaways

  • Your brand presence in Perplexity is what it says when people ask about you by name: what you are, whether you're legit, what you cost, how you compare and who replaces you.
  • Perplexity shows numbered citations on every answer, and highlighting a sentence shows its sources, so most wrong claims trace back to a URL.
  • In Ahrefs' September 2026 data, Reddit (21.6%), YouTube (20.8%) and Wikipedia (6.3%) held nearly half the citation share of Perplexity's top 50 domains.
  • Run six prompt types three times each in incognito mode, label every sentence, and fix the sources that recur across runs first.
  • Fix your own pages first: pricing in plain HTML with a date, a fair comparison page and a public changelog.
  • You can't edit Reddit, Wikipedia or a rival's page. Reply openly as staff, request edits the proper way, and publish better pages that outweigh them.
  • The flag icon and a support ticket are Perplexity's only documented ways to report a wrong answer, and it sells no ads, so nobody can buy a better answer about you.

What Brand Presence in Perplexity Covers

Your brand presence in Perplexity is the set of answers people get when they ask about you by name. It's a different job from discovery. A buyer who types "best project management tool for agencies" is shopping the category. A buyer who types "Is Plannora legit?" already knows you and is deciding whether to trust you.

Branded prompts come late in the buying journey, so a wrong answer can undo a sale your marketing already won. Getting named in unbranded "best X" lists is a separate playbook, covered in how to rank on ChatGPT.

Three things to judge in every branded answer

  1. Accuracy. Are the facts true today? Check price, plans, features, owner and location.
  2. Tone. Is the verdict fair? One old complaint can read like a current pattern.
  3. Sourcing. Which pages did the answer lean on, and how many of them are yours?

Why Perplexity is the easiest engine to audit

Perplexity puts its sources in view. Its own guide says every answer links to numbered citations you can open, and tells users to "highlight answer text to check the sources referenced." You'll use that second feature most. You aren't guessing what a model "thinks" of you. You're reading the pages it read.

Where Perplexity Gets What It Says About You

Before you can change your brand presence in Perplexity, you need to know where its answers come from. Perplexity runs its own search engine. Its index tracks over 200 billion URLs, and it splits each page into "self-contained spans" that are ranked one by one. So a single paragraph on an old page can become the sentence about your price.

The domains Perplexity cites most

Three large studies give a rough map. Each counts a different thing.

StudyDateSampleWhat it found for Perplexity
AhrefsSept 20263.1M+ US queriesReddit 21.6%, YouTube 20.8%, Wikipedia 6.3% of top-50 share; LinkedIn 0.9%, Trustpilot 0.8%
ProfoundJune 2025680M citations, all enginesReddit was 6.6% of all Perplexity citations but 46.7% of its top-10 share
YextOct 20256.8M citations, 3 engines86% of citations came from websites, listings and reviews that brands can influence

The numbers don't clash. Ahrefs and Profound report shares among the most-cited domains, where a few giant sites dominate. Yext counted every citation for branded and unbranded questions in four industries, where brand websites (44%) and listings (42%) carried most of the weight. For a branded prompt, expect both: facts from your site and profiles, opinions from Reddit, YouTube and review sites.

Why the same question gets different sources

Ask a branded question twice and the sources change. In the 2026 study "Don't Measure Once", two Perplexity runs of the same prompt within 24 hours had an average source overlap of 0.28 (a Jaccard score, where 1 means identical lists). One run is an anecdote. A source that shows up in two of three runs is a pattern.

Three more things shape what you see:

  • Memory. Perplexity's memory stores preferences such as "favorite brands," so a logged-in account can get a different answer from a stranger. Perplexity says memory is off in incognito mode.
  • Freshness. Perplexity filters out "stale content" before ranking. Ahrefs found its in-text citations averaged 1,166 days old, about 250 days newer than Google's organic results.
  • Blocking. Blocking PerplexityBot won't hide you. For a blocked page, Perplexity may still index "the domain, headline, and a brief factual summary." You just lose the chance to be quoted in your own words.

The Brand Answer Audit: Six Prompts, One Source Trail

The brand answer audit is a one-afternoon check of your brand presence in Perplexity. It turns "Perplexity is wrong about us" into a ranked list of pages to fix, using six prompt types, one label for each sentence and one source for each label.

The six prompt types

Prompt typeAsk it like thisWhat to checkWhere bad sentences often startFirst fix
Identity"What is Plannora?"Category, audience, owner, founding yearA thin About page, stale directory profilesA plain facts page; matching profiles
Trust"Is Plannora legit?"Scam or safety claims, ownershipOld Reddit threads, one bad news storyA trust page with proof; a staff reply
Price"How much does Plannora cost?"Plans, prices, free plan, trial termsOld pricing posts, stale reviews, pricing drawn by JavaScriptDated pricing in HTML; update old posts
Reviews"Plannora reviews"Which complaints repeat, and if they're still trueReview sites, Reddit, YouTubeMore real reviews; public answers; a changelog
Comparison"Plannora vs Loopcraft"Who wins, for whom, and if each difference is true todayThe rival's comparison page, copycat listiclesYour own fair comparison page
Alternatives"Alternatives to Plannora"Reasons given for leaving, rivals namedRivals' "alternatives" pages, churn threadsFix or answer the reason

The fourth column is a starting guess. The audit exists to replace that guess with real URLs.

How to run the audit

  1. Open a clean session. Use Perplexity's incognito mode, or a logged-out private window, so memory can't shape the answer. Note the date and your location.
  2. Write one phrasing per type. Add a second phrasing for the prompts that matter most, such as price and comparison.
  3. Run each prompt three times. Save the answer text and the full source list each time. Our free AI Visibility Prompt Kit gives you a starter list and a scorecard.
  4. Pull out the sentences about you. Skip sentences about the category in general.
  5. Label every sentence with one of the five labels below.
  6. Trace each bad sentence. Highlight it to see its sources, or match its inline number to the source list. Open the page and find the passage.
  7. Classify the source as owned, a profile you control, review or editorial, community, or a rival's page.
  8. Rank the fixes. A source that shows up in two or more runs, behind two or more bad sentences, goes to the top.

Five labels for every sentence

LabelWhat it meansWhat it usually tells you
CorrectTrue today and fairly putLeave it, and note the source. That page is working.
OutdatedTrue once, not nowA stale page is still in the index, often your own.
WrongNever trueA source is wrong, or the answer mixed you up with another brand.
UnsupportedNo cited source says itA gap. No page states the fact, so the answer filled it in.
Negative but trueA real complaint or limitYou can't remove it. You can answer it and show what changed.

Unsupported sentences need a closer look. When no source states a fact, the model may guess, which is an AI hallucination. The fix is a page that states the fact in one plain sentence.

Score the audit

Three numbers are enough to track brand presence in Perplexity from one month to the next:

  • Error rate: outdated, wrong and unsupported sentences, divided by all sentences about you.
  • Clean-answer rate: answers with no bad sentence, divided by all answers.
  • Owned-source share: citations to your domain, divided by all citations.

Worked Example: Tracing Plannora's Three Bad Sentences

Plannora is a made-up project management tool at plannora.io. Its rival, Loopcraft (loopcraft.ai), is made up too, and so is the review site stackreview.co. Every number here is illustrative. The point is the method and the math.

Plannora ran one phrasing of each prompt type, three times each, in incognito mode: 18 answers. Each answer cited five sources on average, so the audit logged 90 citations and 126 sentences about Plannora. Twenty-one of those sentences were bad, and three claims did most of the damage.

Bad sentence 1: the old price

  • The sentence: "Plannora's Team plan costs $12 per user per month." It showed up in all three pricing answers and in two comparison answers.
  • The truth: Plannora cut the price to $10 in March 2026. Label: outdated.
  • The trail: Source 2 was Plannora's own 2024 post announcing the $12 price. Source 4 was a stackreview.co review last updated in 2024. The live pricing page never appeared.
  • The cause: The pricing page loads its plan table with JavaScript, and in Glenn Gabe's 2025 case study Perplexity "could not read the content" of pages that rely on client-side JavaScript.
  • The fix: Serve the plan table as HTML with an "as of March 2026" line. Add a dated note to the 2024 post that links to current pricing. Email stackreview.co the new price.

Bad sentence 2: the bug that was fixed

  • The sentence: "Several users report that Plannora loses tasks when syncing with Google Calendar." It showed up in all three trust answers and two of the three review answers.
  • The truth: The bug was real in early 2024 and was fixed in version 3.2 that June. Label: outdated.
  • The trail: Source 1 was a 2024 Reddit thread in a project management community. Source 3 was a 2024 YouTube review that repeated it. No Plannora page mentioned the bug or the fix.
  • The fix: Publish a dated help page on the bug and its fix, plus a changelog entry. Reply in the thread from a staff account that says who you are, with the fix date and a link. Ask the YouTuber to pin a correction.

Bad sentence 3: the rival's verdict

  • The sentence: "For small teams, Loopcraft is the better pick because Plannora has no free plan." It showed up in all three comparison answers and two alternatives answers.
  • The truth: Plannora has had a free plan for up to five users since 2025. Label: wrong.
  • The trail: Source 1 was loopcraft.ai's own "Loopcraft vs Plannora" page. Source 5 was a 2025 listicle that copied its table. Plannora had no comparison page, and its free plan only appeared in an FAQ that also loaded with JavaScript.
  • The fix: Publish a fair, dated "Plannora vs Loopcraft" page that says where Loopcraft wins, too. Put the free plan in the pricing table. Send the listicle's author the correction.

Before and after: the tally

Plannora shipped the page fixes and sent the emails in week 1. Eight weeks later it ran the same 18 prompts the same way.

MeasureBeforeAfter (8 weeks)
Sentences about Plannora126120
Bad sentences21 (17%)5 (4%)
From the three traced claims15 (5 + 5 + 5)2 (0 + 1 + 1)
Answers with at least one bad sentence13 of 18 (72%)4 of 18 (22%)
Citations to plannora.io14 of 90 (16%)29 of 90 (32%)
Comparison and alternatives answers picking Loopcraft5 of 63 of 6

Plannora's brand presence in Perplexity improved on every measure, but not every source moved. Of the 90 citations, rival pages fell from 9 to 5 and news, listicles and directories from 17 to 9, while Reddit only slipped from 22 to 19. That's expected: you can't delete a thread. What changed is that the thread now has a staff reply with the fix, and Plannora's help page competes for the same question.

Is the change real? With only 18 answers, the margins are wide. The share of answers with a bad sentence fell by 50 points, and the 95% margin for comparing two samples this small is about ±28 points, so it clears the noise. A drop of two or three answers would not. For a trend you can trust, use more prompts and more runs, as our guide to measuring GEO explains.

Fix the Source, or Outweigh It

Improving brand presence in Perplexity comes down to sources. Every bad sentence leads to one of five kinds, and each has its own fix and speed.

Source typeExamplesWhat you can doHow fast it can change
OwnedPricing, about, help and blog pagesEdit, date or redirectFastest: at the next recrawl
Profiles you controlLinkedIn, Crunchbase, app stores, review-site vendor profilesMatch the facts to your siteFast
Review and editorialTrustpilot, G2, news, listiclesAsk for a correction with proofWeeks, at the editor's pace
CommunityReddit, YouTube, forumsReply openly as staffSlow: you add, never delete
Rival pagesA competitor's "vs" pagePublish a fairer page of your ownSlow: you outweigh, never edit

Start with the pages you own

Owned pages are the fastest way to improve brand presence in Perplexity, because you fully control them and bad sentences often start there. Perplexity times its indexing to a URL's "importance and likely update frequency," so keep the pages that hold your facts current and honestly dated.

  • Pricing in plain HTML. List plans, prices, currency, the free plan and trial terms, with an "as of" date. Our free AI search readiness check flags content that only loads with JavaScript.
  • A facts page. State what you do, who it's for, your founding year, owner and location, and add Organization schema with sameAs links to your profiles. Keeping those facts identical across listings is its own job, covered in how to optimize your business for AI search.
  • Fair comparison pages. A dated page that admits where the rival wins reads like a source, not an ad.
  • A public changelog. It gives Perplexity a dated page that says "fixed."
  • Old posts with old facts. Add a dated note at the top, or redirect the page if nothing else on it matters.

Ask third parties for corrections the right way

  • Review sites and publishers. Send one short email with the wrong line, the right fact and a link to your dated source page.
  • Wikipedia. Its conflict-of-interest guideline says people with a conflict are "strongly discouraged" from editing their own articles. Propose changes on the talk page with the {{edit COI}} template, and disclose who you work for.
  • Reviews. Ask all your real customers for reviews, not just happy ones. The FTC's rule on fake reviews, announced in August 2024, bans buying fake reviews, paying for reviews of a set sentiment, undisclosed reviews by staff and using threats to suppress negative ones.

Answer community threads in the open

For trust and review questions, community threads shape much of your brand presence in Perplexity. Reddit is the most-cited domain in the Ahrefs data, and you can't delete a thread. Reddit's rules ask users to "participate authentically" and not to "impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner."

So reply from an account that says who you are, with the fact, the date and a link to the page that proves it. Don't argue, and never post as a "happy customer." Our entry on Reddit SEO covers the wider tactics. On YouTube, ask the creator to pin a correction.

Outweigh what you can't change

A rival's comparison page stays up, and an old news story stays true to its date. You can't edit either one, but you can win back brand presence in Perplexity by giving it a better page to cite for the same question. Perplexity ranks passages, not whole pages, so write the passage it needs: the question as a heading, the answer in the first sentence, then the evidence and a date. What Perplexity Will and Won't Do for Your Brand

Report the wrong answer anyway

Perplexity's help article on wrong answers, last modified on 3 September 2026, says to use the flag icon below the answer or open a support ticket. Include the thread link, a description of the error and the answer you expected. "Misinformation" and "outdated information" are both on its list.

The flag won't fix your brand presence in Perplexity on its own. As of September 2026, Perplexity's help center doesn't describe a separate channel for brand owners, or a way to claim a profile and submit your own facts. A wrong sentence tends to come back until its sources change.

There is no paid route

In February 2026 a Perplexity executive said "a user needs to believe this is the best possible answer," and the company said it had no plans to return to ads. Its shopping product cards "aren't sponsored," in its own words. So nobody can buy a better brand answer, including your rivals.

If you sell products or publish content

Perplexity's free Merchant Program, launched in November 2024, takes product data and, it says, raises the chance of being a "recommended product." Its in-chat checkout, Instant Buy, covers "thousands of other merchants on BigCommerce, Shopware, and Wix platforms." An accurate product feed is one more source you control. Publishers have a separate route: Comet Plus shares subscription revenue with partner publishers.

Keep Your Brand Presence in Perplexity Accurate

Brand presence in Perplexity drifts. You change a price, a rival publishes a new comparison, or an old thread gets a second life. Rerun the audit once a month, and again after every launch or price change.

  • Keep the prompts and conditions fixed so each month compares cleanly with the last.
  • Add a prompt whenever a new question about you shows up in sales calls or support tickets.
  • Log every bad sentence with its source URL and the date you fixed it. Over time, the log becomes a map of the sources Perplexity trusts for your brand.
  • Check your server logs for Perplexity-User hits on the pages you fixed. Perplexity says this fetcher visits a page when a user's question needs it.

A monthly manual audit is enough for most small brands. Once you track dozens of prompts, a paid tracker saves time; our guide to Perplexity SEO tools compares the options.

Where Rankbox Fits After the Audit

Rankbox doesn't track AI citations today, so the audit stays a manual job, and the free Prompt Kit is the quickest way to run it. Rankbox helps with the fix list, which is where brand presence in Perplexity actually changes. Most fixes here are pages: a comparison page, a pricing explainer, a help page that answers a Reddit thread. Rankbox's Citation-Ready Writer researches the live web and writes source-backed articles of 2,000 to 3,500 words in your brand voice. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google, so you can see which ones your site doesn't answer yet.

Reddit Presence, which is rolling out, finds relevant threads and drafts replies for you to post yourself; it never posts on its own. Articles reach your site through Rankbox's API. The Business plan is $49.50 a month with a 7-day trial (card required). See plans and pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is brand presence in Perplexity?

Brand presence in Perplexity is what Perplexity says when people ask about your company by name, and which sources it uses to say it. It covers identity, trust, price, reviews, comparisons and alternatives. It's separate from whether Perplexity names you in unbranded "best X" answers, which is about discovery rather than reputation.

How do I check my brand presence in Perplexity?

To check your brand presence in Perplexity, ask it six kinds of questions about you in incognito mode, three times each: what you are, whether you're legit, your price, your reviews, you against a rival, and alternatives to you. Highlight each sentence about you to see its sources, then label it correct, outdated, wrong, unsupported or negative but true.

Can I ask Perplexity to correct wrong information about my company?

You can report it, but the fix that lasts happens at the source. Perplexity's help center says to use the flag icon below the answer or open a support ticket, with the thread link and the right answer. It describes no separate channel for brand owners. Update or outweigh the cited page, or the error will likely return.

Why does Perplexity cite Reddit when people ask about my brand?

Reddit is the domain Perplexity cites most. In Ahrefs' September 2026 data, it held 21.6% of the citation share among Perplexity's 50 most-cited domains. Trust and review questions pull in opinion sources. Reply openly as staff with facts and links, and publish a page on your own site that answers the same question.

How long does it take to improve brand presence in Perplexity?

Perplexity doesn't publish a timeline. It schedules recrawls by a page's importance and how often it changes, and it filters out stale content before ranking. Your own pages tend to change fastest because you control them. Third-party pages move at their owner's pace. Rerun your audit a few weeks after each fix to check.

Can you pay to improve brand presence in Perplexity?

No. Perplexity phased out ads and said in February 2026 it has no plans to bring them back, and it says its shopping product cards aren't sponsored. The Merchant Program is free and only improves product data. A better answer comes from better sources: your own pages, fair reviews and honest replies in the threads it cites.
