The short answer
AI search optimization tools are software that help your brand get found, named and cited in AI answers from engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. Some measure how often those answers mention you. Others fix what stops engines from reading your site, or create the pages and mentions that engines quote. No single tool does all of it, so buy by job, not by brand.
The category is young and it's moving fast. Adobe completed its purchase of Semrush on 28 April 2026. On 15 September, Profound raised $180 million at a $1.8 billion valuation. With that much money coming in, plans and prices keep changing, which is why every price in this guide carries a date.
Keep the spend in proportion. Across 74,752 sites, Ahrefs measured AI chatbots sending just 0.28% of all web traffic in March 2026. The channel is small and growing, and much of its value comes from mentions that never produce a click. That makes it easy to overbuy dashboards and underbuy the work that changes answers.
This guide covers the six types of AI search optimization tools, what each one tells you and what it leaves out, what to buy first at four budgets, and a 100-point scorecard for comparing any two tools. It's the buying half of generative engine optimization. For the strategy half, start with our AI SEO guides.
Key Takeaways
- AI search optimization tools come in six types: visibility trackers, access checkers, content graders, content engines, off-site presence builders and analytics. Each does a different job.
- Only visibility trackers show what AI answers say about you, and they report a sample of answers, never the full picture.
- Fix access first, because it's nearly free. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control is included on every Cloudflare plan, and Screaming Frog crawls 500 URLs at no cost.
- Most paid entry plans in this guide cost $29 to $149 a month on vendor pricing pages on 28 September 2026. Otterly.AI Lite sits at the bottom and Qwoted Pro at the top.
- Buy for your bottleneck: a tracker if you don't know where you're missing, a content engine if you know but the fixes never get written.
- Compare like with like, then score nine weighted criteria. Method transparency carries 15 of the 100 points, because AI answers change on every run.
- Treat a lead under 5 points, or one that flips when you move 10 points of weight, as a tie. Settle it with a side-by-side trial.
What AI Search Optimization Tools Actually Do
Classic SEO tools report on one results page: where you rank for a keyword and who ranks above you. AI search optimization tools aim at a different target. An AI answer is a paragraph built from pages the engine pulls at the moment someone asks. It names a handful of brands and sources, and the job is to be one of them.
Every tool in the category does one of three things:
- Measure. Run prompts and record whether answers name or cite you, or count the AI visits and bot fetches your site gets.
- Fix. Find what stops engines from reading or trusting your pages: blocked crawlers, content that needs JavaScript, thin answers.
- Create. Research, write or place the content engines quote, on your own site and on other people's.
Split those verbs by where the work happens and you get six types. Many products span two. Frase, for example, sells article writing and prompt tracking in one plan. Still, every product has a main job, and that main job is what you're paying for.
What sits outside every tool's view
Google says it plainly in its AI optimization guide: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." So AI search optimization tools watch answers from the outside, the way you would by hand, only at scale. Graders compare your page with pages that already rank. So when a vendor hints at inside knowledge of how an engine picks sources, treat it as a sales line.
The Six Types of AI Search Optimization Tools
Here are all six types of AI search optimization tools on one table. The prices are entry plans as each vendor listed them on 28 September 2026.
| Type | Main job | What it tells you | What it leaves out | Entry price (28 Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility trackers | Measure | How often answers name or cite you, by prompt and engine | Why you're missing, and what an answer is worth | $29/month, Otterly.AI Lite |
| Access and crawler checkers | Fix | Whether AI bots reach, fetch and read your pages | Whether a fetched page gets cited | $0, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control |
| Content graders | Fix | How a draft compares with pages that rank now | Whether a higher grade earns citations | $49/month billed yearly, Surfer Discovery |
| Content engines | Create | Which questions to answer, plus the pages that answer them | Whether those pages get cited once live | $49/month, Frase Starter |
| Off-site presence builders | Create | Where your category is discussed and who wants a quote | Which mentions an engine actually read | $0, F5Bot or Qwoted Basic |
| Analytics and attribution | Measure | AI visits, bot fetches and signups on your own site | Mentions that never produce a click | $0, Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools |
1. Visibility trackers
A visibility tracker runs a fixed list of buyer prompts in AI engines on a schedule and records what comes back: which brands are named, which pages are cited, and in what order. The practice is called prompt tracking. It's the only type that shows you the answers themselves.
- Tells you: your mention rate, citation rate and share of voice per engine, the pages engines cite instead of yours, and how each moves over time.
- Leaves out: why you're missing, and whether an answer sent anyone to your site. It also reports a sample. In the 2026 paper "Don't Measure Once", identical runs within 24 hours averaged a source overlap of just 0.32 to 0.43 across the study's campaigns (a Jaccard score, where 1 means the same list), and the authors recommend at least seven runs per prompt per day for brand monitoring.
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: Otterly.AI Lite is $29 a month for 15 prompts checked daily in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Peec AI Starter is $95 a month for 50 prompts on three models you pick, per Peec's AI instructions page. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month per domain for 25 daily prompts.
- Buy one when: you've run a manual baseline and your prompt list has outgrown a spreadsheet.
That's as far as this guide goes on trackers. For a vendor-by-vendor field guide, see our ChatGPT rank tracker comparison and our roundup of Perplexity SEO tools. To read the numbers once you have them, see how to measure GEO.
2. Access and crawler checkers
These tools check whether AI crawlers can reach your pages at all. They read robots.txt rules, CDN and firewall settings and server logs, and some check whether key content loads without JavaScript. This is the cheapest type to buy and the easiest problem to create: one CDN setting can shut an engine out overnight.
- Tells you: which AI bots visit, which pages they fetch, which requests fail, and which bots ignore your rules.
- Leaves out: whether a fetched page ended up in an answer. A fetch is a precondition, not a result.
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: Cloudflare says AI Crawl Control is "available on all plans," free ones included. It shows which AI services access your content and which crawlers break your robots.txt rules. Screaming Frog's SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs free, and a licence costs $279 a year. Our free AI crawler log analyzer and robots.txt tester cover the basics: which AI bots show up in your logs, and whether your rules let them in.
- Buy one when: your site outgrows a free crawl limit, or a day of logs no longer tells you enough.
3. Content graders and optimizers
A grader scores a draft against the pages that rank for the same topic today: the subtopics they cover, their headings, their length and structure.
- Tells you: what competing pages cover that yours skips, and where a draft runs thin.
- Leaves out: whether a higher grade earns citations. A grade measures how closely you match today's winners, while AI answers also reward facts nobody else has published. Google's guide adds that "You don't need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search."
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: Surfer Discovery is $49 a month billed yearly. Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages and 20 drafts, with unlimited users. Both also sell some AI visibility tracking, so check which job you're paying for.
- Buy one when: several writers, human or AI, need one quality bar for every draft.
4. Content engines
A content engine does the research and the writing. It finds the questions buyers ask, drafts the pages that answer them and, in some products, sends them to your site. Of all AI search optimization tools, this is the type that changes what engines can find, because an AI answer can only cite a page that exists.
- Tells you: which questions are worth answering, with a draft or a finished article for each.
- Leaves out: whether those pages get cited after they go live. Pair it with a tracker or a hand-run prompt panel.
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: Frase Starter is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 10 articles plus 50 tracked prompts on ChatGPT and Google AI, so it spans two types. Rankbox, which we make, is $49.50 a month for 30 articles on one site. Rankbox doesn't track AI citations today, so it sits here and nowhere else on this list.
- Buy one when: you know which questions you're missing and publishing is what holds you back.
5. Off-site presence builders
AI answers lean on what other sites say about you: press coverage, review sites, forum threads and comparison lists. Off-site tools, from press-request platforms to community alerts, help you find and earn those mentions.
- Tells you: where people discuss your category, and which journalists or threads want an answer this week.
- Leaves out: which of those mentions an engine actually read. Match them against your tracker's cited-source list to find out.
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: F5Bot sends free alerts when your keywords appear on Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. Qwoted connects experts with reporters: Basic is free with two pitches a month, and Pro is $149 a month for 35. Rankbox's Reddit Presence is rolling out. It finds relevant threads and drafts helpful replies for you to post yourself.
- Buy one when: your own pages are solid, and your tracker shows engines citing third-party pages that leave you out.
6. Analytics and attribution
The last type counts what AI answers do for your business: visits from assistants, bot fetches per page, and the signups those visits bring.
- Tells you: AI referral sessions, landing pages and conversions, plus the AI reports Google and Microsoft now publish for site owners.
- Leaves out: the buyer who read your name in an answer, never clicked, and typed your URL a week later. A "How did you hear about us?" field on your signup form catches that buyer.
- Examples, as listed on 28 September 2026: the core is free. Search Console's generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, with no clicks. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report counts citations across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, with grounding queries. For bot visits and AI referrals in one place, Known Agents (darkvisitors.com now redirects there) has a free plan and a $29-a-month Startup plan with 1 million events a month.
- Buy one when: AI referrals are large enough that the free reports no longer answer your questions.
Which AI Search Optimization Tools to Buy First
Buy in the order the work flows. An engine has to reach your page before it can cite it, and a tracker's chart means little without a baseline to compare it with. So spend nothing until steps 1 to 3 are done.
- Open the free reports. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4 cost nothing, and the first two report on Google's and Microsoft's own AI answers.
- Check access. Test your robots.txt, read a day of server logs, and switch on AI Crawl Control if your site runs on Cloudflare.
- Take a manual baseline. Run 30 buyer prompts by hand in two or three engines. Our free AI Visibility Prompt Kit writes the prompts and a scorecard to tick off mentions.
- Buy for your bottleneck. If you don't know where you're missing, buy a tracker. If you know and the fixes pile up unwritten, buy a content engine. If your pages exist but read thin, buy a grader.
- Add off-site work once your own pages answer the questions well.
- Add paid analytics last, when AI traffic is big enough to study on its own.
Buy order by budget
Each stack of AI search optimization tools below builds on the free one. Every price is the monthly figure on the vendor's pricing page on 28 September 2026.
| Monthly budget | Example stack | Cost a month | What it covers | Still done by hand |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0 | Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control, Screaming Frog (free), F5Bot, Rankbox's free tools | $0 | Access checks, Google and Bing AI reports, Reddit alerts, a hand-run prompt panel | Tracking, writing, outreach |
| About $50 | Otterly.AI Lite, or Rankbox | $29 or $49.50 | Daily tracking of 15 prompts in 4 engines, or 30 articles a month | The half you didn't buy |
| About $150 | Rankbox + Peec AI Starter | $144.50 | 30 articles, plus 50 prompts on 3 models | Outreach, grading |
| $500 and up | Rankbox + Otterly.AI Standard + Qwoted Pro + Clearscope Essentials | $516.50 | 30 articles, 100 tracked prompts with API access, 35 pitches, 20 Clearscope drafts | Strategy and judgment |
At about $50, pick by bottleneck, not by price. If your baseline shows you in most answers already, a $29 tracker keeps watch. If it shows you missing from most, a tracker will chart the gap every day without closing it, so the money usually does more on pages, written by you or by a content engine.
At $500 and up, the extra spend buys volume and reach, not a new kind of insight. Many teams at this level lean on a suite they already pay for. Ahrefs, for example, listed 5 tracked AI prompts on its $129-a-month Lite plan on 28 September 2026.
How to Compare AI Search Optimization Tools: The 100-Point Scorecard
Most checklists for AI search optimization tools list criteria and stop there, which leaves you with ten answers that all say "it depends." The 100-Point Tool Scorecard turns those answers into one number per tool, in three steps: two gates, nine weighted criteria and a swing test for ties. It works for any of the six types.
Step 1: Pass two gates
Gates are yes-or-no. A tool that fails one is out, whatever it would score.
- Same job. Compare trackers with trackers and content engines with content engines. A tracker will always beat a writer at tracking. If a product spans two types, score it only on the job you're buying it for.
- Your must-have engines. List the engines your buyers actually use, then check they're in the plan you'd buy, not just on the homepage. If one isn't in that plan, the tool fails the gate.
Step 2: Score nine weighted criteria
Score each criterion from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). Multiply each score by its weight and divide by 5 to get its points. Add the points up. A perfect tool scores 100.
| # | Criterion | Weight | What to ask | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Core job depth | 20 | Is there enough of the main thing (prompts, articles, pages, pitches) on the plan you'd buy? | The feature you need sits one tier up |
| 2 | Method transparency | 15 | Where does the data come from? App interface or API, which model and mode, how many runs per prompt? What is a score built on? | "Proprietary" as the whole answer |
| 3 | Coverage beyond the must-haves | 15 | Which extra engines, countries and languages, and at what cost? | Engines on the homepage that your plan leaves out |
| 4 | Actionability | 10 | Does each finding point to a page, prompt or source you can act on? | A score with no next step |
| 5 | Cost per unit of work | 10 | What do you pay per tracked answer, finished article or audited page? | Credits with no published conversion |
| 6 | Data export | 10 | Can you download raw answers, cited URLs or full articles as CSV or through an API? | Charts and PDFs only |
| 7 | Workflow fit | 8 | Does it connect to your CMS, analytics or reporting? | A weekly copy-and-paste step |
| 8 | Seats, sites and limits | 7 | How many users, sites and projects before the price jumps? | A second site means a second plan at full price |
| 9 | Terms and vendor stability | 5 | Monthly billing? A trial? Refunds? A recent change of owner? | Annual contract on day one |
| Total | 100 |
Method transparency gets 15 points because AI answers are noisy. When SparkToro studied brand recommendations in January 2026, it told buyers to make vendors show their math before paying: how many runs per prompt, how many prompts, and how closely API results match what real users see. The "Don't Measure Once" authors add that collection method and model version should stay fixed for the whole tracking window. A vendor with no answer to either is asking you to trust a chart.
How the criteria read for each tool type
The nine criteria stay the same across types. What you check under each one changes.
- Trackers. Core job is prompts × engines × runs. Unit cost is per tracked answer.
- Access checkers. Method is whether bots are verified by IP or only by user-agent string, which is easy to fake. Unit cost is per crawled URL or logged event.
- Content graders. Method is which pages the grade is built from. Unit cost is per graded draft.
- Content engines. Method is whether each claim links its source. Actionability is whether it picks topics for you. Unit cost is per finished article.
- Off-site builders. Core job is pitches, alerts or threads a month. Unit cost is per pitch.
- Analytics. Method is how AI referrals and bots are identified, and whether past data can be reclassified.
Step 3: Run the swing test
Weights are opinions. Before you trust a winner, move 10 points of weight between your two most important criteria and score again. If the lead flips, or it was under 5 points to begin with, you have a tie.
Settle a tie with a 14-day trial of both tools, run side by side with the same prompts, engines and competitors. If they still look alike after that, buy the cheaper one.
A Worked Example: Scoring Two Trackers
Here's how the scorecard compares AI search optimization tools in practice. Plannora is a made-up project-management SaaS with a two-person marketing team. It sells in the US and UK, and its buyers use ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. It's choosing between two fictional trackers, A and B. Both pass the gates: same job, and all three engines are in the plans it would buy.
| Tracker A | Tracker B | |
|---|---|---|
| Price a month | $99 | $79 |
| Prompts | 50 | 40 |
| Engines | 5 | 3 |
| Runs per prompt per day | 1 | 3 |
| Countries | 12 | 2 (US and UK) |
| Answers a month (prompts × engines × runs × 30 days) | 7,500 | 10,800 |
| Cost per 1,000 answers | $13.20 | $7.31 |
| Raw answer export | No, charts and PDF | Yes, CSV and API |
Tracker B collects 44% more answers for $20 less a month. Neither reaches the seven daily runs the 2026 paper recommends, but B gets closer. Here's how Plannora scored them:
| Criterion | Weight | A score | A points | B score | B points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core job depth | 20 | 4 | 16.0 | 4 | 16.0 |
| Method transparency | 15 | 2 | 6.0 | 5 | 15.0 |
| Coverage beyond the must-haves | 15 | 5 | 15.0 | 3 | 9.0 |
| Actionability | 10 | 4 | 8.0 | 3 | 6.0 |
| Cost per unit of work | 10 | 3 | 6.0 | 4 | 8.0 |
| Data export | 10 | 2 | 4.0 | 5 | 10.0 |
| Workflow fit | 8 | 4 | 6.4 | 3 | 4.8 |
| Seats, sites and limits | 7 | 3 | 4.2 | 4 | 5.6 |
| Terms and vendor stability | 5 | 3 | 3.0 | 4 | 4.0 |
| Total | 100 | 68.6 | 78.4 |
Tracker B leads by 9.8 points. Tracker A has more engines, more countries and a nicer dashboard. But B runs each prompt three times a day, explains how, and lets Plannora export every answer. When answers shift on every run, that method is worth more than coverage Plannora doesn't need yet.
The swing test changes the story
Now say Plannora plans to launch in Germany and France next quarter, so coverage matters more to it than method. Move 10 points from method transparency (15 down to 5) to coverage (15 up to 25), and rescore:
- Tracker A: coverage becomes 25 × 5 ÷ 5 = 25 points, up 10. Method becomes 5 × 2 ÷ 5 = 2 points, down 4. New total: 68.6 + 10 − 4 = 74.6.
- Tracker B: coverage becomes 25 × 3 ÷ 5 = 15 points, up 6. Method becomes 5 × 5 ÷ 5 = 5 points, down 10. New total: 78.4 + 6 − 10 = 74.4.
A now leads by 0.2 points, so under those weights the two are tied. The verdict for Plannora: if the expansion is only an idea, buy B. If it's firm, run both for 14 days on the same 40 prompts, and let B's lower price, $20 a month less, settle any tie that survives the trial.
That's the point of the swing test when you compare AI search optimization tools. The scorecard doesn't pick a tool for you. It shows which of your own priorities the decision hangs on.
Five Sales Claims to Question
The same few pitches turn up across AI search optimization tools. Here's how to test each one.
- "We have inside data from Google or OpenAI." Google's guide says no third-party tool has that access. Ask where the data really comes from.
- "Your AI ranking is #2." SparkToro found brand lists so unstable that the same prompt almost never returns the same list twice. How often you appear across many runs is the number that holds.
- "One AI visibility score across all engines." Each engine searches and cites in its own way, and a blended score hides which one moved. Ask for each engine's numbers on its own.
- "Add llms.txt and get cited." Google says its search ignores llms.txt files, and that such files "will neither harm nor help" your visibility there. Treat the file as optional.
- "Guaranteed citations." Nobody controls what an engine writes. A vendor can promise work, not answers.
Where Rankbox Fits Among AI Search Optimization Tools
Among AI search optimization tools, Rankbox is a content engine, type 4 on the list above. It maps the questions buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and scores each one for volume, difficulty and intent (volumes are model estimates, not measured counts). Its Citation-Ready Writer researches the live web and writes 2,000–3,500-word articles with their sources cited, in your brand's voice. Every draft gets an SEO and GEO score before you see it. Finished articles reach your site through the Rankbox API, which a developer connects once.
It isn't a tracker. Rankbox doesn't track AI citations today, so pair it with a hand-run panel from the free Prompt Kit, or with one of the trackers above. The Business plan is $49.50 a month for one site and 30 articles, with a 7-day trial of up to 7 articles (a card is required). See plans and pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are AI search optimization tools?
AI search optimization tools are software that help a brand get named and cited in answers from AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. They come in six types: visibility trackers, access checkers, content graders, content engines, off-site presence builders and analytics. Each one measures, fixes or creates a different part of the path to a citation.
How much do AI search optimization tools cost?
Entry plans run from free to about $150 a month. On 28 September 2026, Otterly.AI Lite listed at $29, Frase Starter at $49, Rankbox at $49.50, Peec AI Starter at $95 and Clearscope Essentials at $129. Access checks and first-party AI reports are free. Most vendors also sell custom enterprise plans.
How do you compare AI search optimization tools?
Compare tools of the same type only, and drop any whose plan leaves out an engine your buyers use. Score the rest from 1 to 5 on weighted criteria: core job, method transparency, coverage, actionability, unit cost, data export, workflow fit, limits and terms. Then move 10 points of weight between your top two criteria. If the winner changes, run a side-by-side trial.
Which AI search optimization tool should I buy first?
Start with the free ones. Open Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4, check that AI crawlers reach your site, and run 30 buyer prompts by hand. Then buy for your bottleneck: a tracker if you don't know where you're missing, or a content engine if you know and the fixes aren't getting written.
Can one tool do all of AI search optimization?
Rarely well. Some products span two types: Frase sells writing and prompt tracking in one plan, and Surfer and Clearscope pair content grading with some AI visibility tracking. Most small teams pay for one of these AI search optimization tools, matched to their bottleneck, and use free ones for everything else.
Do AI search optimization tools replace SEO tools?
No. AI engines still find pages through crawling and search indexes, so crawlable, useful pages come first. Google's guide says you don't need special files, markup or writing styles for its AI features. What AI search optimization tools add is a view classic SEO tools don't give: what AI answers say about you, and how AI bots and visitors use your site.
