The short answer

A ChatGPT rank tracker sends a fixed list of buyer prompts to ChatGPT on a schedule and records three things: whether your brand is named, where it sits among the brands named, and which pages the answer cites. Of the nine tools below, as of September 2026, Peec AI documents the most ChatGPT-specific detail (from $95 a month), SE Visible works out cheapest per answer ($99 a month), and Otterly.AI is a low-cost start ($29 a month).

The stakes keep rising. In 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly users and that search usage had "nearly tripled in a year." But ChatGPT is also tricky to measure. It decides for itself whether to search, it reads memory, it guesses your location from your IP address, and it rarely gives the same answer twice.

So the real question is which tool measures the ChatGPT your buyers actually use. This guide gives you a 10-question spec sheet to put to any vendor, shows how nine trackers answer it, and works out what each one costs per tracked prompt. For how to run the numbers once you have them, read our guide to measuring GEO.

Key Takeaways

  • A ChatGPT rank tracker reports rates across many runs, not a fixed rank. Mention rate, average position and citation rate are the core numbers.
  • The biggest split between tools is where the answers come from: the ChatGPT web app or the OpenAI API. Peec AI, SE Visible, Profound and Ahrefs say they use the web interface.
  • ChatGPT often answers without searching. In one 2026 study, only 42.2% of ChatGPT runs returned at least one citation, so a good tracker flags whether search ran.
  • Memory, account type and IP location all change ChatGPT's answers. Ask how each vendor controls them.
  • Paid entry prices on 28 September 2026 ran from $20 (Rankscale Essentials) to $295 (AthenaHQ Starter). Profound now sells brands a free 7-day trial, then a custom contract.
  • Price per tracked prompt ran from about $0.16 (LLMrefs, weekly) to $3.96 (Semrush's standalone toolkit). Check runs per prompt before you compare.
  • A tracker shows the gap. The pages ChatGPT reads are what close it.

What a ChatGPT Rank Tracker Actually Measures

Google gives each page one position. ChatGPT gives a paragraph that changes on every run. So "rank" in a ChatGPT rank tracker means an average taken across many answers, and it only makes sense next to the other rates. The practice is called prompt tracking.

MetricWhat it countsThe ChatGPT catch
Mention rateAnswers that name you, out of all answersSplit answers that searched the web from answers that didn't
Average positionYour mean place among the brands namedOnly means something averaged over many runs
Citation rateAnswers that link to your pagesThe Sources panel lists more than the inline links
Share of voiceYour mentions out of all brand mentionsMoves with the rival list you set up
SentimentThe tone of each mentionScored by a model, so spot-check it

Treat single positions with suspicion. When SparkToro and Gumshoe ran the same prompts many times, they found less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT would give the same list of brands in two answers. The authors call any tool that reports a single "ranking position in AI" "full of baloney." A visibility rate across many runs, they conclude, is a fair metric.

The citation catch matters too. OpenAI's search help page says the Sources button shows "cited sources and other relevant links." A tool that counts everything in that panel will report more citations than one that counts only the links inside the answer.

Six Things That Make ChatGPT Tricky to Track

Every engine is noisy. ChatGPT adds six problems of its own, and each is a place where a ChatGPT rank tracker can quietly measure the wrong thing. Each one maps to a question on the spec sheet below.

The app and the API are different products

Some tools query chatgpt.com. Others call OpenAI's API, which is built for developers. In the API, OpenAI's web search guide says "the model can choose to search the web or not," the developer picks the model, and location is a setting you pass in. None of that is guaranteed to match what a person sees in the app, so a ChatGPT rank tracker that blends the two is measuring a mix.

Researchers treat the two as separate data. The authors of "Don't Measure Once", a 2026 study of AI search visibility, wrote that "mixing API and interface data would create a methodological inconsistency for ChatGPT specifically," and cut their data to a window with one method. Even free tools differ here. HubSpot's AI Search Grader lists its OpenAI engine as "GPT-5.4 mini," an API model, not the ChatGPT app.

OpenAI says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically" when a question needs current facts. When it skips search, it answers from training data, so the page you published last week won't be cited. In a set of repeated runs in "Don't Measure Once," only 42.2% of ChatGPT runs returned at least one citation, which the authors tie to its habit of skipping search on definition-style questions.

Memory and account type change the answer

If memory is on, ChatGPT "may use relevant saved memories when rewriting a search query," per the same help page. Its shopping carousel also weighs "Memory or Custom instructions," according to OpenAI's shopping help. The account type matters as well. Where OpenAI runs ads, they may appear for Free and Go users and in logged-out sessions, while Plus, Pro and business accounts see none.

Location comes from the IP address

ChatGPT "may use an approximate location based on your IP address," and OpenAI notes that a VPN can shift it. A tracker that runs every prompt from one data center measures one market, whatever the dashboard's country label says.

One prompt hides several searches

When ChatGPT searches, it "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries," then may send more specific follow-ups. These fan-out queries decide which pages it reads. A tool that logs them shows you why a rival's page got picked. Our ChatGPT SEO guide covers how fan-out works.

Every run comes out different

In "Don't Measure Once," identical ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and Perplexity runs made within 24 hours averaged a source overlap of just 0.32 to 0.43 across the study's campaigns (a Jaccard score, where 1 means the same list). The authors advise "at least 7 runs per prompt per day for brand visibility monitoring." Most plans below run each prompt once a day, so read their numbers as monthly averages, not daily scores.

The ChatGPT Rank Tracker Spec Sheet: 10 Questions for Any Vendor

This is our checklist for buying a ChatGPT rank tracker. Send it to vendors before a demo. A clear answer is good. "Not stated" is also an answer, and it tells you where to press.

#Ask the vendorWhy it matters for ChatGPTA good answer sounds like
1Do you query the ChatGPT app or the OpenAI API?The API picks its own model and search setting"The web app. API models are labeled as separate engines."
2Logged in or out, and is memory off?Memory rewrites searches; free and logged-out sessions can show ads"Clean logged-out sessions, no memory, no custom instructions."
3Do you record whether ChatGPT searched?Answers without search won't cite new pages"Each answer carries a web-search flag you can filter on."
4Which model wrote each answer?Model updates move results overnight"The model is logged per answer, and switches are marked on charts."
5How many runs per prompt, and how often? One run is a sample of one"Daily by default, and you can buy more runs per day."
6Do you keep the full answer and every source, in order?Inline links and the Sources panel differ"Raw text, cited URLs with positions, and the full Sources list."
7Do you separate ads and shopping cards from the answer?Ads and product results run on separate systems"Each answer is flagged for ads and product carousels."
8Where are prompts sent from?ChatGPT reads location from the IP"In-country infrastructure, without place names added to prompts."
9Do you log the fan-out queries ChatGPT ran, or predict them?A logged query is evidence; a predicted one is a guess"Logged per tracked answer, grouped by prompt."
10Can I export one row per answer? You can re-check the math and switch vendors"CSV and API, one row per answer, with history."

Question 4 is the hardest to get answered. Semrush comes closest, saying it analyzes answers from "the latest model of ChatGPT in search mode". None of the nine vendors' pages says it logs the model behind each answer, so ask.

How Each ChatGPT Rank Tracker Answers the Spec Sheet

All nine say they capture the URLs ChatGPT cites, so the table covers where they differ. Cells come from each vendor's pages as of 28 September 2026. "Not stated" means those pages don't say.

The 9 Best ChatGPT Rank Tracker Tools, Ranked

We ranked each ChatGPT rank tracker by how much it documents about its ChatGPT data, then by value. Every fact links to the vendor's own page, and every price is as listed on 28 September 2026. For Perplexity-specific detail on the same vendors, see our guide to Perplexity SEO tools.

1. Peec AI: best for ChatGPT-specific detail

Peec's AI instructions page says ChatGPT "is tracked natively via UI simulation," while the OpenAI Search API is a separate model you unlock on its own. That keeps app and API data from blending. Each answer is flagged for web search, ads, maps, shopping and product comparisons, and Peec logs the fan-out searches ChatGPT ran. Sources are split into pages retrieved and pages cited. Peec also says it runs prompts from infrastructure in 80+ countries instead of adding place names to prompts, which is its own description.

  • Best for: teams that want to know why ChatGPT picked a source.
  • Entry price: Starter at $95 a month for 50 prompts on three models you choose, run daily, with unlimited users.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI on self-serve plans. The pricing page puts Perplexity under add-ons and Enterprise, while the instructions page lists it on every plan, so confirm.

2. SE Visible: best for answers per dollar

SE Visible is SE Ranking's standalone visibility product. Its FAQ says it "collects real AI responses using a browser and graphical user interface, not simulated answers or API-based results," refreshed daily. Basic checks 200 prompts in five engines every day, about 30,000 answers a month by SE Ranking's count. It reports mentions, sentiment and the domains and URLs cited.

  • Best for: brands that want a long prompt list checked daily without an enterprise contract.
  • Entry price: Basic at $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and AI Overviews, with setup in English, French, German, Dutch or Spanish. SE Ranking says Claude is coming.

3. Otterly.AI: best cheap start

Otterly's help center says it runs prompts as a non-personalized user, and an earlier Otterly post says it "does not track logged-in user states", so memory stays out. Its features page lists daily checks of every cited URL with link position over time, plus tracking of ads and shopping cards on ChatGPT. You set a country for each prompt. Its fan-out tool shows the queries an engine "may generate" from a prompt, which is a prediction rather than a log.

  • Best for: small teams that want daily ChatGPT checks on a short list.
  • Entry price: Lite at $29 a month, or $25 billed yearly, for 15 prompts. Standard is $189 for 100.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot included. On Lite, AI Mode and Gemini are $9 a month each, and Claude is $29.

4. Profound: best for enterprise programs

"We capture directly from the browser," Profound's Answer Engine Insights page says, and it runs every tracked prompt daily across 30+ languages and 150+ regions. ChatGPT Shopping data comes with Enterprise, not the trial. That same page still quotes Starter and Growth prompt counts that no longer appear on the pricing page, so trust the pricing page.

  • Best for: large brands that need many markets, SSO and shopping data.
  • Entry price: a free 7-day Trial with 50 prompts a day on ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews, then a custom Enterprise contract. Our Profound vs Peec AI page compares the two in depth.
  • Engines: up to nine on Enterprise.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar: best for looking up any brand

Ahrefs says all its prompts run "through the free, publicly available web interfaces" of ChatGPT and the other assistants, and it stores the raw answers. Its methodology lists 14.5 million ChatGPT queries a month in the index, so you can check a rival without setup. For your own prompts, you pick the assistant, the location and a daily, weekly or monthly refresh. Ahrefs bills one check per prompt, per assistant, per location, each time it runs.

  • Best for: Ahrefs users and competitor research.
  • Entry price: custom prompt packages from $50 a month for 2,500 checks. The $129 Lite plan includes 5 daily prompts, and the Brand Radar AI index starts at $199.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Grok for custom prompts.

6. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: best if you already use Semrush

Semrush's prompt tracking help says it checks your prompts daily and that its Sources report "shows every domain and URL that AI platforms cite." It supports desktop results only for now. Your AI data sits next to your keyword rankings.

  • Best for: teams whose SEO already runs in Semrush.
  • Entry price: $99 a month per domain for 25 prompts. Semrush One Starter is $199 for the SEO toolkit plus 50 prompts.
  • Engines: the pricing page names ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. The help page lists ChatGPT Search, AI Mode and Gemini for prompt tracking.

7. Rankscale: best for fan-out and shopping analysis on a budget

Rankscale's facts page lists "ChatGPT GUI" apart from API models such as GPT-5, so you pick which one to measure. Its pricing page says every plan shows "the internal searches AI engines run while answering your tracked prompts." Shopping card and sponsored ad analysis for ChatGPT start on Pro. Runs can be scheduled from hourly to monthly, which helps if you want more than one reading a day.

  • Best for: analysts who want fan-out data and flexible run counts.
  • Entry price: Essentials is $20 a month for 120 credits, or up to 480 answers at the usual 0.25 credits each. Pro is $99 for 1,200 credits, or up to 4,800 answers.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Mistral.

8. Scrunch: best for tracking by persona

Scrunch collects answers "using a mix of browser automation and official platform APIs." New prompts run daily for 14 days, then every 72 hours by default, and you can refresh any prompt by hand. Enterprise raises the persona and country limits and includes full fan-out data.

  • Best for: teams that care how answers change by buyer type.
  • Entry price: Core at $250 a month for 125 prompts, one country and one persona, with a 7-day trial.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews and Copilot on Core. Enterprise lists nine.

9. LLMrefs: best for keyword-first teams

LLMrefs starts from keywords, not prompts. It writes prompts around each keyword and tracks brand mentions, sources and fan-out queries. Its pricing page lists "OpenAI ChatGPT" and "OpenAI ChatGPT Search" as separate engines, so ask which one feeds your report. Reports refresh weekly.

  • Best for: SEO teams that think in keyword lists.
  • Entry price: $79 a month for 500 prompts, with a 7-day free trial.
  • Engines: ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Meta AI and DeepSeek.

Also considered. AthenaHQ Starter is $295 a month for 3,600 credits (one credit is one AI response) across 11 models, and its free tier gives 300 credits. Surfer's AI Search Analytics is $95 a month for 50 daily prompts in five engines. Neither page we read says how ChatGPT answers are collected.

Cost per Tracked Prompt: What a ChatGPT Rank Tracker Really Costs

Sticker prices hide the real unit, so don't pick a ChatGPT rank tracker on its headline price. The table divides each plan's monthly price by what it tracks. Prices are monthly billing as listed on 28 September 2026, and a month is 30 days.

PlanPrice a monthPromptsEngines per promptChatGPT runs per prompt a monthPrice per promptPrice per answer
Otterly.AI Lite$2915430$1.93$0.016
Peec AI Starter$9550330$1.90$0.021
SE Visible Basic$99200530$0.50$0.003

Scrunch Core$2501254About 10 after day 14$2.00$0.050
LLMrefs$79500Not statedAbout 4.3 (weekly)$0.16Not stated
AthenaHQ Starter$295Set by creditsYou chooseYou chooseDepends$0.082

How the math works:

  1. Price per prompt is price ÷ prompts. Otterly: $29 ÷ 15 = $1.93. SE Visible: $99 ÷ 200 = $0.495, shown as $0.50.
  2. Price per answer is price ÷ (prompts × engines × runs). Otterly: 15 × 4 × 30 = 1,800 answers, and $29 ÷ 1,800 = $0.016. Peec (50 × 3 × 30 = 4,500) and SE Visible (about 30,000) publish their own totals.
  3. Ahrefs and Rankscale sell units. Ahrefs: 2,500 checks ÷ 30 days = 83 daily prompts, and $50 ÷ 2,500 = $0.020. Rankscale: 1,200 credits ÷ 0.25 = 4,800 answers, and $99 ÷ 4,800 = $0.021.
  4. Scrunch and LLMrefs run less often. Scrunch's 72-hour cycle gives 30 ÷ 3 = 10 runs in a steady month, so 125 × 4 × 10 = 5,000 answers and $250 ÷ 5,000 = $0.050. LLMrefs runs weekly: 52 ÷ 12 = about 4.3 runs a month.
  5. AthenaHQ counts one credit per answer: $295 ÷ 3,600 = $0.082.

The cheapest prompt isn't always the cheapest reading. LLMrefs costs $0.16 a prompt but runs weekly. Peec costs $1.90 but runs daily, about seven times as often. Price per answer is the fairer test, and SE Visible's $0.003 is the lowest in the table.

Worked example: 50 daily ChatGPT prompts for Plannora

Plannora is a made-up project management tool. Its team wants a ChatGPT rank tracker that checks 50 buyer prompts every day. Here is the smallest listed plan on each tool that fits.

ToolSmallest plan that fitsPrice a monthWhat's left over
AhrefsBasic prompt package$5050 × 30 = 1,500 checks used, 1,000 spare
Peec AIStarter$95Two more engines on the same 50 prompts
SE VisibleBasic$99150 more prompts, four more engines
RankscalePro$9950 × 30 × 0.25 = 375 credits used, 825 spare
Otterly.AIStandard$18950 more prompts
SemrushSemrush One Starter$199SEO tools for 5 websites

Ahrefs is the cheapest of these for ChatGPT alone. Its 1,000 spare checks cover 33 of the prompts daily on a second assistant (1,000 ÷ 30 = 33). To add Gemini on all 50, Peec, SE Visible and Rankscale stay under $100. To add both Gemini and Perplexity, SE Visible and Rankscale do (3 × 375 = 1,125 of Rankscale's 1,200 credits). Rankscale's $20 Essentials plan holds 120 credits, enough for 16 daily ChatGPT prompts, so it falls short here.

Free Checks and the Wider ChatGPT SEO Tool Stack

Not everyone searching for a "ChatGPT SEO tool" wants a tracker. Some want to use ChatGPT itself for SEO chores such as outlines, keyword grouping and meta descriptions. For those jobs, our free AI question generator, content brief generator and meta description writer cover the common ones. The rest of this section is for the tracking side.

Free ChatGPT rank tracker options

  • Run it by hand. Our free AI Visibility Prompt Kit writes 30 buyer prompts and a scorecard. Use a logged-out window with memory off, and run each prompt more than once.
  • Semrush's free checker covers ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, three times a day with no account.
  • HubSpot's AI Search Grader is a free one-time check across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Remember it lists an API model, GPT-5.4 mini.

After the Tracker: Write the Pages That Close the Gap

A ChatGPT rank tracker tells you where ChatGPT leaves you out. It won't change the answer. What changes it is a page on your site, or on a site ChatGPT trusts, that answers the question better than the pages it reads now.

That's the part Rankbox does. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, then the Citation-Ready Writer researches the live web and writes source-backed articles aimed at those gaps. Rankbox doesn't track AI citations today, so pair it with a tracker above or the free Prompt Kit. The Business plan is $49.50 a month for 30 articles; see pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ChatGPT rank tracker?

A ChatGPT rank tracker is software that runs your chosen prompts in ChatGPT on a schedule and records whether your brand is named, its place among the brands named, and which pages are cited. Because answers change on every run, good trackers report rates and averages, not one fixed rank.

Is there a free ChatGPT rank tracker?

Yes, for quick checks. Semrush's free checker allows three checks a day without an account, and HubSpot's AI Search Grader gives a one-time report. AthenaHQ has a free tier with 300 credits. For ongoing tracking at no cost, run a prompt list by hand with a spreadsheet.

How accurate is a ChatGPT rank tracker?

A ChatGPT rank tracker is as accurate as its sample. One study found identical runs within a day had a source overlap of just 0.32 to 0.43 on a 0-to-1 scale, and it advises at least seven runs per prompt per day. Most plans run once a day, so read results as monthly averages.

Does a ChatGPT rank tracker use the ChatGPT app or the API?

It depends on the vendor. Peec AI, SE Visible, Profound and Ahrefs say they collect from the web interface, and Scrunch mixes browser automation with APIs. Rankscale lists the ChatGPT interface apart from API models, and LLMrefs lists ChatGPT and ChatGPT Search as separate engines, so check which one your plan uses.

How many prompts should I track in ChatGPT?

Start with 25 to 50 buyer prompts that leave your brand name out. Cover problems, "best X for Y" questions, comparisons and alternatives. Keep the set varied, since results from one or two prompts mostly reflect their quirks, and make sure each prompt runs many times.

Can a ChatGPT rank tracker improve my visibility?

No. A tracker only watches answers. Visibility moves when the pages ChatGPT reads change: your own pages, plus reviews, roundups and forums in your category. Our guide to how you rank on ChatGPT covers what moves the numbers.
