The short answer

No, not directly. A podcast image isn't a documented ranking factor: Apple Podcasts ranks search results on metadata, popularity and engagement, and Spotify says visuals "don't get indexed by search engines the way text does." It helps indirectly, by earning clicks in app and video results, and the images on your episode pages can appear in Google Images and social previews.

So the useful question isn't whether your cover art ranks. It's where each podcast image is shown, what that surface needs, and which image to use where. The answer differs for your cover, your episode pages and your video thumbnails, and Apple and Google even give opposite advice on text in images.

This post answers that narrow question with each platform's own specs. For how the words in your episodes become search citations, read our guide to podcast transcripts and how spoken audio becomes search citations.

Key Takeaways

  • No platform lists artwork as a search ranking factor. Apple names metadata, popularity and engagement; Spotify says visuals affect clicks, not indexing.
  • Apple wants show covers at 3000 by 3000 pixels (1400 to 3000 accepted by RSS), in PNG or JPG, with no transparency and a clearly legible title.
  • YouTube recommends a 1280 by 1280 square thumbnail for a podcast playlist, and 16:9 thumbnails for each episode video.
  • Google reads alt text, captions, file names and nearby text to understand an image on your page, alongside computer vision.
  • Google advises against a logo or an image with text as a page's preferred image, so your cover art is a poor choice for an episode page's og:image.

"Helps SEO" can mean three things: ranking higher, getting clicked more once shown, or appearing in more places. A podcast image does the second and third. No platform documents the first.

PlatformIs artwork a documented search factor? What the platform says the image does
Apple PodcastsNo. Search factors are metadata, popularity and engagementThe show cover is "often ... the main way listeners encounter your show"
SpotifyNo. Spotify says visuals aren't indexed like textAffects click-through rate, per Spotify's podcast SEO guide
YouTubeNot named. Search relevance uses title, tags, description and video contentThe thumbnail is the preview in results and the embedded player
Google SearchNot for your page's ranking; images can rank on their own in Google ImagesGoogle uses alt text, page content and computer vision to understand an image

Spotify goes a step further. Its August 2026 guide says click-through rate "is a signal that both search engines and platform algorithms use." That's Spotify's claim, and it doesn't cite Google for it. What is safe to say is simpler, and it's our inference rather than anyone's data: a clear podcast image makes people more likely to tap a result they've already been shown. That's worth having, but it isn't a ranking signal you can point to in anyone's documentation.

One master file, three exports

A 3000 × 3000 pixel master in RGB, saved without an alpha channel, covers all three. Export it as a JPG or PNG for Apple and Spotify, and at 1280 × 1280 for the YouTube podcast playlist. Apple's RSS guide also asks for 72 dpi and a file extension that matches the real file type.

Rules that get artwork rejected

Apple says a cover "may be rejected" if it shows Apple logos or hardware. Its content guidelines also forbid using another show's artwork without permission. None of these are ranking rules, but a rejected cover delays the whole listing.

Episode art and video thumbnails

Apple's episode art guide says to "avoid using your podcast logo or any text in the artwork," because the episode title appears underneath. Spotify notes that some apps always show the main show cover instead of episode art. On YouTube, each episode is a video, so it needs a normal 16:9 thumbnail. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels, at least 640 pixels wide, and caps uploads at 2 MB from a phone or 50 MB from a desktop.

Rankings aside, images earn their keep in three places you control.

Episode page images and alt text

On your own site, every podcast image is a normal web image, and Google's image guidelines apply. Google says it uses alt text "along with computer vision algorithms and the contents of the page" to understand an image. It also reads captions and image titles, and treats the file name as "very light clues."

Four habits follow:

  • Use an <img> element. Google says it doesn't index CSS background images.
  • Write alt text that describes the picture: "Oren Falk speaking at a studio microphone," not "podcast SEO podcast image."
  • Name the file for its subject, such as oren-falk-retainer-room.jpg, not IMG_0042.jpg.
  • Place the image next to the text it illustrates, with a caption if it adds facts.

Google warns that stuffing alt attributes with keywords "may cause your site to be seen as spam." Describe what's in the picture and stop. For images, video and audio across AI search more broadly, see our guide to multimodal SEO.

Social previews and Google's preferred image

When someone shares an episode page, apps read the page's Open Graph tags. The Open Graph protocol defines og:image as the image that "should represent your object." Google also reads og:image and schema.org's primaryImageOfPage when picking a page's preview image, and it gives specific advice: "Avoid using a generic image (for example, your site logo) or an image with text."

That's where Apple's and Google's advice collide. Apple wants the show title on your cover. Google advises against text-heavy images as a page's preferred image. So don't reuse the square cover as every episode page's og:image. Use a wide, horizontal photo of the guest or a scene from the episode instead. For Google Discover, Google suggests images at least 1200 pixels wide, ideally 16:9, with the max-image-preview:large setting. Our free Open Graph generator shows how a link will unfurl before you publish.

Video thumbnails in Google results

A video can only appear in Google's video features with a valid thumbnail at a stable URL, per Google's video guidance. For YouTube uploads, YouTube supplies it. For video you host yourself, the thumbnail must be crawlable, at least 60 × 30 pixels, and in a format Google supports, such as JPEG, PNG or WebP.

The Podcast Image Checklist

Twelve checks across the three places a podcast image appears. Tick each one for your show, then for your most recent episode page.

Show cover (apps)

  1. The master file is 3000 × 3000 pixels, RGB, with no transparency.
  2. The show title is readable at thumbnail size, with strong contrast.
  3. The cover contains no Apple logos, device images or another show's art.
  4. The same cover is used on Apple, Spotify and the YouTube playlist (1280 × 1280 export).

Episode pages (your site)

  1. The page shows at least one relevant image in an <img> element, not a CSS background.
  2. The file name describes the subject.
  3. The alt text describes the picture in plain words, without keyword lists.
  4. The og:image is a wide photo or scene, not the text-heavy square cover.
  5. The preferred image is at least 1200 pixels wide if you want Discover eligibility.

Video

  1. Each YouTube episode has a 16:9 custom thumbnail, at least 640 pixels wide.
  2. Thumbnail text, if any, matches the episode title rather than promising something else.
  3. Self-hosted video thumbnails sit at stable URLs that Googlebot can fetch.

A quick worked example

Tallyfold, a fictional invoicing app, runs a fictional show called Paid on Time. Its episode pages used the square cover as og:image, so every shared link showed the same logo tile with the show title. Checks 5 to 9 failed on the latest page, so it scored 7 of 12.

The fix took one afternoon per template, not per episode. Tallyfold added a 1600 × 900 guest photo to each page, with a descriptive file name and alt text, and set it as og:image. That cleared checks 5 to 9 and moved the page to 12 of 12. The cover art didn't change at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does podcast cover art affect search rankings?

Not in any documented way. Apple ranks podcast search on metadata, popularity and engagement, and Spotify says visuals aren't indexed like text. Cover art affects whether people tap your show once it's shown, which can matter for engagement, but no platform names artwork as a ranking factor.

What size should a podcast image be?

Make the show cover 3000 × 3000 pixels, square, RGB, as a JPG or PNG with no transparency. Apple accepts 1400 to 3000 pixels through RSS, and Spotify imports up to 3000 × 3000. Export a 1280 × 1280 copy for your YouTube podcast playlist, and use 16:9 thumbnails for individual YouTube episodes.

Should a podcast image include text?

The show cover should include your show title, as Apple advises, kept large enough to read at small sizes. Episode art should avoid text, because apps print the episode title beneath it. For your web pages' preview image, Google advises against logos and images with text, so use a photo there instead.

Do I need episode art for every episode?

No. Episode art is optional on Apple and Spotify, and both fall back to the show cover if you skip it. Spotify also notes that not every app displays episode art. It's worth adding when a guest photo or topic image would help a listener pick the episode.

What alt text should a podcast image have?

Describe what the image shows in plain words, such as "Oren Falk speaking into a studio microphone." Google uses alt text with computer vision and the page's content to understand images, and warns that keyword stuffing in alt attributes can look like spam. Skip alt text that only repeats the show name.

Can a podcast image rank in Google Images?

Yes, if it's on an indexable web page. Images inside Apple or Spotify apps don't count, but an image on your episode page can appear in Google Images like any other. Use an <img> element, a descriptive file name and alt text, and place it near related text.
