The short answer
To get cited by ChatGPT as a local business, fix the listing data ChatGPT reads before you rewrite your website. For "near me" questions, ChatGPT builds business cards from third-party listing providers, and Yelp is the only one with public proof behind it. Your own site earns a cited link when OpenAI's search crawler can reach it and it states your hours, prices and service area in plain text.
The audience is already there. In BrightLocal's March 2026 report, 31% of US consumers said they had used ChatGPT for a business recommendation in the past year. But ChatGPT names very few places. SOCi's 2026 index of more than 350,000 chain locations found it recommended 1.2% of them.
This post covers ChatGPT only: what OpenAI documents about local results as of September 2026, where the business data comes from, how to check what ChatGPT says about your local business today, and a checklist of fixes. For Gemini, Copilot, Siri and Perplexity, see our full guide to local SEO in ChatGPT and other AI assistants. For citations on any kind of site, see our playbook for getting cited by ChatGPT.
Key Takeaways
- OpenAI says ChatGPT uses your rough location and may share it with "trusted third-party providers" of nearby business listings. It doesn't name them, and it offers no way to claim a listing inside ChatGPT.
- Yelp's own filing says its ratings and reviews "recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience." In an August 2026 test, Yelp data sat behind ChatGPT's business cards in 95.83% of 2,879 runs.
- A business card isn't a link. In the same test, Yelp's share of visible, clickable citations was only 1.04%, so your website still has to earn the link.
- Apple Maps, Foursquare and Google barely showed up in that card data, so none of them is a first fix for ChatGPT.
- Check what ChatGPT says about your local business in 20 minutes: five prompts, three runs each, in an unpersonalized temporary chat or a logged-out window.
- Fix in this order: Yelp, your website, then trade listings such as Tripadvisor or OpenTable where they fit your business.
What OpenAI Documents About Local Results in ChatGPT
OpenAI covers local search in one help page, Searching the web with ChatGPT, plus its release notes. Here is what it says, checked on 29 September 2026, and what each point means for a local business.
| What OpenAI says | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT estimates location from your IP address. Sharing device location is optional and off by default. | The same prompt gives different answers in different towns. Test from your own area. |
| It rewrites "good restaurants near me" into a search such as "top restaurants San Francisco." | Your pages should name your service and your town together, the way that search does. |
| It may share location with "trusted third-party providers that help provide more local information, such as nearby business listings." | Listing data you don't own decides much of who gets named. |
| On iOS and Android, results may include a map. | Mobile answers show pins, so the address on your listings matters. |
| It shows reservation times from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp on consumer plans using GPT-5.6 Sol or Luna. | A restaurant that isn't bookable on one of the three can't show a "Reserve" button. |
| Sites should allow OAI-SearchBot and OpenAI's published IP ranges. | Blocking the crawler keeps your own pages out of answers. |
Two more notes from OpenAI. The search providers its help page lists are Microsoft and Shopify. And since the 24 June 2026 model update, OpenAI says ChatGPT "makes better use of location context to surface relevant nearby options."
What OpenAI doesn't say
OpenAI names no map provider and no listing provider. It also describes no way for a local business to claim, edit or verify a place in ChatGPT, the way you would on Google or Apple. So you can't fix ChatGPT directly. You fix the sources it reads.
Where ChatGPT's Local Business Data Comes From
Only one source has both a company statement and independent data behind it.
Yelp's quarterly filing for the period to 30 June 2026 says: "Yelp ratings and reviews recently began powering ChatGPT's local experience in relevant categories." Its CEO repeated the point in the second-quarter results. In August, Yelp also added reservations and waitlists inside ChatGPT for restaurants in the US and Canada.
Then Ben Fisher of Steady Demand measured it. He ran 2,880 prompts across 12 US metros and 12 business types in one 72-hour window in August 2026, and logged which providers stood behind each business card. The results, for the 2,879 runs that worked:
| Provider | Share of runs with its data behind a business card | Visibly cited | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yelp | 95.83% | 1.04% | Fix first, whatever your trade |
| Tripadvisor | 28.90% | 13.55% | Fix if you serve visitors, food or drink |
| OpenTable | 16.88% | 1.70% | Restaurants: be bookable |
| Resy | 8.96% | 0.00% | Restaurants in the US |
| 4.62% | 0.07% | Keep current for Google, not for ChatGPT | |
| Apple Maps | 0.00% | 0.14% | Not a ChatGPT lever; matters for Siri |
| Foursquare | 0.00% | 0.00% | Don't start here |
Yelp's card share ranged from 93.75% for hair salons to 97.92% for plumbers, so it isn't only a restaurant thing. Treat these as one month's snapshot, not a law. Fisher's own caveat is that "citation share is not data influence": a source can shape an answer without showing up in it.
Business cards and cited links are two different wins
Look at the gap between the two Yelp columns. Yelp fills the card, with the name, rating and hours, but it rarely appears as the link people click. In August 2026, Suganthan Mohanadasan logged ChatGPT's search calls and saw the same split: a places lookup returned business names, then ordinary web searches checked each one.
Those checking searches are where your website comes in. For how ChatGPT picks which pages to cite in general, see how ChatGPT search decides citations. A page that states your hours, prices and service area plainly gives ChatGPT something to confirm and cite. A local business with a great Yelp page and a thin website gets named but not linked.
How to Check What ChatGPT Says About Your Local Business
This check takes about 20 minutes. Do it before you change anything, so you have a baseline.
- Open a clean session. Use a logged-out browser window, which OpenAI says can still search, or a temporary chat. OpenAI's temporary chat page notes that it can still use your memories unless you pick Unpersonalized before the first message.
- Check your location. Turn off any VPN. Test from your own town, or name the town in the prompt.
- Run five prompts, swapping in your details:
- "[service] near me"
- "best [service] in [town]"
- "[service] in [town] open on Sunday"
- "what are [business name]'s hours"
- "what do reviews say about [business name]"
- Open your business card if one appears, and note every fact on it and any source logo, such as Yelp.
- Open Sources to see which web pages ChatGPT cited.
- Run each prompt three times. That's 15 answers. Answers change between runs, so one screenshot proves little.
Log it in a simple sheet:
| Prompt | Run | Named? | Position | Facts shown | Wrong facts | Card source | Cited pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| best plumber in Boise | 1 | Yes | 3rd | Hours, rating | "Closed Sunday" | Yelp | Two listicles |

The Sources to Fix, in Order
Work down this list for your local business. Each step says how strong the evidence is: documented by a company, observed in a test, or inferred.
- Yelp (documented and observed). Claim your page at biz.yelp.com. Correct the category, hours, phone and website, and add current photos. Reply to reviews with facts. Don't ask customers for Yelp reviews: Yelp's rules tell businesses not to, and its software may hide reviews that look requested. Our business listings guide covers the review rules for each platform.
- Your website (documented). Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and make sure your host or CDN doesn't block it. OpenAI says sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," except as navigational links. Then publish hours, prices, service area and emergency policy as plain text on one page.
- Tripadvisor (observed). If people visit you for food, drink, stays or things to do, claim it. It was the most visibly cited provider in the test.
- OpenTable, Resy or Yelp reservations (documented). Restaurants only. These are the three booking sources OpenAI names.
- Trade directories (observed in your own check). Whatever appears in the Sources panel for your prompts, such as a lawyer or dentist directory, is worth claiming. ChatGPT reads the same pages a local business owner would find by searching their trade and town.
- Bing Places (inferred). Microsoft is ChatGPT's named search partner, but OpenAI doesn't say Bing Places data reaches ChatGPT. It's free and it feeds Copilot, so do it, but not first.
Two things to leave for later. Google Business Profile matters a great deal for Google's own AI, just not much for ChatGPT's cards. And the claim that Foursquare supplies most of ChatGPT's local data came from a 50-prompt test in five Spanish cities in May 2025. The August 2026 test found Foursquare in 0.00% of runs.
The ChatGPT Local Business Checklist
Score your local business one point per line. The checklist covers only what ChatGPT reads, so it's shorter than a full listings audit.
| # | Check | How to verify | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yelp page claimed | biz.yelp.com shows you as the owner | Documented |
| 2 | Yelp hours, phone and category match your site | Compare them side by side | Documented |
| 3 | A Yelp review in the last 90 days, earned without asking | Your Yelp page | Inferred (one study links higher ratings to picks) |
| 4 | OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt | A robots.txt tester | Documented |
| 5 | Host or CDN allows OpenAI's published IP ranges | Firewall or CDN settings | Documented |
| 6 | Hours, prices and service area in plain text on one page | View the page without images | Inferred |
| 7 | Service and town named together on a page | Search your own site | Inferred from the documented query rewrite |
| 8 | LocalBusiness markup that matches your listings | Google's Rich Results Test | Documented by Google; ChatGPT use inferred |
| 9 | Tripadvisor claimed, if you serve visitors | Tripadvisor listing | Observed |
| 10 | Bookable on OpenTable, Resy or Yelp, if you're a restaurant | Try booking yourself | Documented |
| 11 | Bing Places matches your site | Bing Places dashboard | Inferred |
| 12 | ChatGPT visits tracked in analytics | Look for utm_source=chatgpt.com | Documented |
For check 12, OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so your analytics can separate those visits.
Example: a made-up plumber scores 5 of 12
Brackenmoor Plumbing is a made-up, three-van plumbing firm in Boise, Idaho (brackenmoorplumbing.example). It runs a 24/7 emergency line. The owner does the 20-minute check. In the nine answers to the three unbranded prompts, ChatGPT names Brackenmoor twice, a 22% mention rate. On the branded prompts, its business card says "Closed Sunday," and the source logo is Yelp. For a local business that sells emergency callouts, that one wrong line costs the most.
The checklist shows why. The website already passes checks 4, 5, 6 and 8, and Bing Places is current, so check 11 passes too: 5 of 12. But checks 1, 2 and 3 fail. A customer created the Yelp page, nobody claimed it, and it still lists the old weekday-only hours. Checks 7 and 12 fail too, and checks 9 and 10 don't apply to a plumber. That leaves 10 checks that count, with 5 passing: 50%.
The fix list is short. Claim Yelp and correct the hours (20 minutes). Add a "Boise emergency plumbing" section to the services page (30 minutes). Add a GA4 check for utm_source=chatgpt.com (10 minutes). Then re-run the same 15 prompts in four to six weeks and see whether the card now says open on Sunday.
What Rankbox Can Do for a Local Business Here
Rankbox won't claim your Yelp page, change your listings or track ChatGPT citations. It doesn't do any of those today. The checklist above is manual work, and our free AI Visibility Prompt Kit helps you run the check.
Rankbox helps with checks 6 and 7: the pages ChatGPT's follow-up searches read. Answer-Space Research finds the questions people ask ChatGPT and Google about your trade and town, with volumes as model estimates. The Citation-Ready Writer then drafts sourced articles in your voice, which reach your site through Rankbox's API. The Business plan is $49.50 a month with a 7-day free trial. Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profile for a local business?
OpenAI doesn't say it does. In an August 2026 test of 2,879 runs, Google supplied just 4.62% of the data behind ChatGPT's business cards, while Yelp appeared in 95.83%. Keep your Google profile right for Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, but don't expect it to fix ChatGPT.
Can I claim my local business listing in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI describes no claim or edit process for businesses as of September 2026. ChatGPT takes listings from third-party providers, and Yelp is the one with public evidence behind it. To change what ChatGPT shows, change the sources: your Yelp page, your website and your trade listings.
Why does ChatGPT show the wrong hours for my business?
Most often, a listing ChatGPT reads is out of date. Check the source logo on the business card, then open that listing, usually Yelp, and correct it. Make sure your website states the same hours in plain text, so the follow-up searches ChatGPT runs find a match.
Do I need a Yelp page to be recommended by ChatGPT?
It isn't a stated requirement, but it's the strongest lever on the evidence. Yelp says its reviews now power ChatGPT's local answers, and an August 2026 test found Yelp data behind 95.83% of business cards. A local business with no Yelp page leaves ChatGPT fewer facts to use.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to show my updated listing?
OpenAI doesn't publish a refresh time for listing data. A Yelp edit has to pass through Yelp's feed first, and nobody outside the two companies knows how often it syncs. Re-run your prompts four to six weeks after a fix, with the same settings, before you judge the result.
