Best ChatGPT SEO Software in 2026: Tools to Get Cited and to Work Inside ChatGPT

People type the same query for both, so this guide covers both. Part one sorts the tools that help ChatGPT find, read and cite your pages. Part two covers the SEO tools you can talk to from a ChatGPT chat, and what each one needs. Every price below was checked on the vendor's own page on 29 September 2026.

Timing matters too: OpenAI replaced its App Directory with a Plugin Directory on 23 July 2026, and on 11 September it announced plans to retire custom GPTs. Lists of "SEO GPTs" written before then are going stale.

Two Meanings of ChatGPT SEO Software

Some searchers want ChatGPT to recommend their business. Others want to do their SEO work from a ChatGPT chat. The tools overlap less than you'd think.

Part One: Software That Helps ChatGPT Cite You

ChatGPT search works in steps. OpenAI's help article says it rewrites a question into targeted searches, sends them to providers, then cites some of the pages it reads. Each step has its own kind of ChatGPT SEO software.

Crawl access: can OpenAI's search bot reach you?

OpenAI's crawler page says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, except as plain navigational links. So the first ChatGPT SEO software to reach for is whatever shows you what that bot sees.

• Bing Webmaster Tools (free). OpenAI's help article lists Microsoft among its search providers. Bing's guidelines recommend IndexNow and accurate sitemaps so Bing's index stays current for its search and grounding results. Our Bing Webmaster Tools guide walks through setup.
• Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free up to 500 URLs; $279 a licence per year). Its configuration guide lets you set a custom user agent, including a separate one for robots.txt, and crawl in "Text Only" mode, which ignores client-side JavaScript. Set both to OAI-SearchBot, and the crawl shows roughly what a bot that skips scripts would get.
• Cloudflare AI Crawl Control (free). Cloudflare lists it as available on all plans. If your site sits behind Cloudflare, it shows which AI crawlers reach you and lets you control their access.
• Rankbox's free tools. The robots.txt tester checks a rule for OAI-SearchBot, and the AI crawler log analyzer counts OpenAI bot hits in your access logs.

Content: pages ChatGPT wants to quote

Once the bot can read you, the page has to answer the question well. Two kinds of ChatGPT SEO software help here. Content graders score a draft against pages that already rank. Content engines research and write the article.

• Rankbox (content engine), $49.50 a month. The Business plan covers one site and 30 articles a month, with a 7-day trial. • Surfer (grader and writer), from $49 a month billed yearly. Its Discovery plan, per the pricing page, is built to "draft and optimize content to establish a baseline presence in Google and AI search results," with 120 documents.
• Clearscope (grader), $129 a month. The Essentials plan includes 50 tracked queries, 50 pages and 20 drafts a month, with a 14-day trial.

Tracking: is ChatGPT naming you?

Trackers are the ChatGPT SEO software that tells you whether the rest worked. They run a fixed set of buyer prompts in ChatGPT on a schedule and log who gets named and cited. Two low-cost starting points, as listed on 29 September 2026:

• Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month for 15 prompts, checked daily in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, with ChatGPT ads tracking, per its pricing page.
• Peec AI Starter, $95 a month for 50 prompts, per its pricing page.

Part Two: SEO Tools That Work Inside ChatGPT

This half of the ChatGPT SEO software market changed in 2026. ChatGPT now groups add-ons as plugins. OpenAI's plugin help page says a plugin can bundle skills (saved instructions) with connected apps, and that "the plugin directory is available across ChatGPT plans." Whether a given plugin works for you still depends on your plan, workspace and region.

There's a second route for tools that aren't in the directory. Developer mode gives "full Model Context Protocol (MCP) client support" on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. MCP is an open standard for plugging outside tools into AI apps. OpenAI flags developer mode as "elevated risk" and warns about prompt injection and malicious servers.

The SEO plugins in ChatGPT, compared

These four SEO vendors have listings on OpenAI's plugin pages. Each connection is tied to your own account with the vendor, and each query uses your plan's API units or credits.

Sources for the plan columns: Semrush's MCP help page and prices page, Ahrefs' MCP docs and pricing, SE Ranking's MCP page and plans, and Similarweb's ChatGPT docs. Semrush says its connection is read-only. Ahrefs and Similarweb both say calls draw from your API allowance the same way direct API use does.

Rankbox inside ChatGPT

Rankbox isn't in the plugin directory. Its MCP server, https://rankbox.xyz/mcp, connects through developer mode on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, on the web. It offers three research tools: the questions people ask AI about a topic, content briefs, and meta descriptions. It doesn't publish, audit or pull ranking data. The Two-Bill Rule

Every SEO tool inside ChatGPT carries two bills: the ChatGPT plan that runs the chat and the vendor plan that supplies the data. Prices below are monthly billing, as listed on 29 September 2026, and assume ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.

Two notes on the math. OpenAI's pricing page lists plugins on the Free and Go plans too, so where a vendor names no ChatGPT plan, the $20 may be optional. Developer mode, though, is Plus and above. And annual billing lowers the vendor bill: SE Ranking Core falls to $103.20 a month, and Semrush One Starter to $165.17.

What about SEO GPTs?

On 11 September 2026, OpenAI said it plans "to retire custom GPTs across ChatGPT plans and provide a migration path to plugins." Existing GPTs keep working until the retirement date that applies to you. If an SEO GPT is part of your workflow, find out whether its maker plans a plugin, and don't build anything new on one.

Worked Example: Tallyfold's ChatGPT SEO Software Budget

Tallyfold is a made-up invoicing and payments app for agencies, with a one-person marketing team. The prices are real, as listed on 29 September 2026, but the plan is illustrative.

The math: $49.50 + $20 + $29 = $98.50. Adding SE Ranking Core gives $98.50 + $129 = $227.50. On annual billing for SE Ranking, the top tier drops to $98.50 + $103.20 = $201.70.

With ChatGPT SEO software, the order matters more than the budget. Tallyfold should run the free access checks first, since a blocked bot makes every paid tool pointless. Then it writes the pages its buyers' questions need. Only then is a tracker worth paying for, because there's finally something to track. The in-chat SEO plugin comes last, as a time-saver for research the team already does.
