The short answer

You can see if AI mentions your brand in six places without running a full audit: ChatGPT's search sources, Perplexity's numbered citations, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Bing's AI Performance report, GA4's AI referrals, and branded search in Search Console. The first three let you read the answers themselves. The last three are free reports that record the traces those answers leave.

No single place shows the whole picture. Some count only links to your site, some only clicks, and one only the searches people run after they've heard your name. This guide says what each place shows, what it misses, and which one to open first. When you want a proper baseline across engines, run our 15-minute audit for seeing if AI mentions your brand. It gives you prompts, a scoring sheet and a diagnosis table.

Everything below was checked against each vendor's help pages on 28 September 2026. These products change often, so recheck a setting if a screen looks different.

Key Takeaways

  • Six places show whether AI mentions your brand: ChatGPT sources, Perplexity sources, Google's AI features, Bing's AI Performance report, GA4 and Search Console's branded queries filter.
  • Only the answers themselves show a mention without a link. Google's and Bing's reports count links and citations to your pages.
  • Search Console's generative AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode for every site since 31 August 2026, but shows impressions, not clicks.
  • Bing's report counts citations in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and unnamed partners. Microsoft says a citation isn't a click.
  • GA4's AI Assistant channel counts visits, not mentions, and Google's definition doesn't name Perplexity.
  • A rise in branded searches can follow AI mentions, but many other things lift it too, so treat it as supporting evidence.

The Six-Place Mention Map

Which place to check first

  • You have two minutes: ask Perplexity your main category question and read its numbered sources.
  • You want numbers from Google: open Search Console's generative AI performance report.
  • You want citation counts from Microsoft: open the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • You need to show business value: read GA4's AI Assistant channel, then the Referral rows it misses.
  • You're playing a long game: check the branded queries filter once a month.
  • You need a mention rate across engines: none of the six gives one. Run the 15-minute audit.

Places 1 to 3: Read the Answers Where AI Mentions Your Brand

The first three places are the answers themselves. They're the only places where you'll see a mention with no link, and the only ones that show which rivals were named beside you. The cost is that each answer is a single sample, and answers change from run to run.

Use a clean session for all three. Your own logged-in account knows your company and can tilt the answer. The hub guide has the clean-session settings for each product.

1. ChatGPT search sources

When ChatGPT searches the web, its search help page says the answer may include citations, and a Sources button, "when available," lists the cited sources and other relevant links. Search works for people who are not signed in, too.

What to look for: whether AI mentions your brand at all, where it sits among the brands listed, and whether any of your own pages appear under Sources. Then note which third-party pages were cited when a rival was named. Those are the pages ChatGPT reads for your category.

What it misses:

  • Answers with no search. OpenAI says ChatGPT "may search the web automatically" when a question needs current information. If it doesn't search, there are no sources to read. Pick Search from the tools menu, or type / and choose it, to force one.
  • Your own context. If memory is on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query. Use a temporary chat set to Unpersonalized, which skips memory and custom instructions.
  • Everyone else's answer. You see one answer, from your location, on one run.

A side note for site owners: the same help page says a site becomes eligible for ChatGPT search by letting OAI-SearchBot crawl it. If your pages never appear under Sources, check access before anything else. Our ChatGPT SEO guide covers the crawler side.

2. Perplexity's numbered sources

Perplexity is the easiest place to see if AI mentions your brand, because every answer shows its work. Its help center says each answer includes numbered citations linking to the original sources. And if you're not signed in, your threads are anonymous by default, so a signed-out visit is already a clean session.

Read three things: the brands named, the numbers after each sentence that mentions you, and the domains in the source list. If a sentence about you is wrong, the number beside it points to the page it came from. Our guide to brand presence in Perplexity shows how to trace and fix those sentences.

What it misses: frequency. One answer tells you a brand can appear, not how often it does. Perplexity also bases answers on your network location unless you've set one, so a test from your office shows your market, not every market.

3. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google has two AI surfaces in Search. AI Overviews appear on some searches. Google says they're shown only when they add something to classic results, "and as such, often don't trigger." AI Mode, at google.com/ai, gives an AI answer you can follow up on. Google's guide to AI features says both surface links to supporting pages, and that the links each shows will vary.

To see if AI mentions your brand here, search a category question and read who's named and which pages are linked, as in the first two places. But Google also gives you a count.

The generative AI performance report in Search Console launched on 3 June 2026 and reached all websites by 31 August. It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by page, country, device and date. The help page defines an impression as a time "links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature."

What it misses:

  • Mentions without a link. The report counts links to your site. If an AI Overview names your brand but links a review site, it doesn't show up.
  • Clicks. The report shows impressions. Clicks from AI features are counted in the main Performance report, mixed in with ordinary web results.
  • Rivals. You see your own pages only.

Places 4 to 6: Check the Reports That Record Where AI Mentions Your Brand

The last three places need no prompts. You open a report and read what already happened. None of them shows the words of an answer, and none counts an unlinked mention directly.

4. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report

Microsoft launched the AI Performance report in public preview on 10 February 2026. Its help page says it covers three surfaces: Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and "select partner AI integrations," which it doesn't name.

It won't show each time Microsoft's AI mentions your brand, only when it cites your pages. It shows total citations, which pages were cited, and grounding queries: the phrases the AI searched when it pulled your content. Since a June 2026 update, it also shows Citation Share, your percentage of all citations shown for a grounding query.

What it misses:

  • Clicks. The help page answers its own question, "Do citations represent clicks or traffic?", with a plain "No."
  • Rivals. Microsoft says Citation Share "does not expose competitor domains."
  • Small numbers. The data is a sample, and "very low or infrequent citation activity may not surface." A small site can see nothing and still be cited now and then.
  • Named products outside Microsoft. Because partners aren't named, don't read the report as a ChatGPT report.

5. GA4 referrals from AI assistants

GA4 can't see when AI mentions your brand. It sees the visit that follows when someone clicks, which is AI referral traffic. Since a 13 May 2026 update, GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel. Google's channel definition lists sources "like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok" and says the channel "excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode."

Two gaps are worth knowing. Neither Google page names Perplexity, so look for perplexity.ai in your Referral rows too. And clicks from Google's AI features land in Organic Search, not the AI channel. For ChatGPT, OpenAI's publisher FAQ says it adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which helps you spot those sessions.

What it misses: every mention that doesn't lead to a click. GA4 is proof of value, not a mention counter. For a quick setup, see our 15-minute GA4 setup for AI referral traffic.

6. Branded search lift in Search Console

A buyer who reads your name in an AI answer may not click. They may search for you later instead. Search Console's branded queries filter makes that trend easy to watch. Google announced it in November 2025, and since 11 March 2026 it has been available to all eligible sites.

In the Performance report, filter your queries to Branded. Google's system decides what counts as branded, including misspellings and product names, and Google warns some queries "may occasionally be misidentified." The Insights report also has a card that splits clicks into branded and non-branded.

What it misses: cause. A branded rise can come from a launch, an ad campaign, press or word of mouth. Read it next to your other evidence. If branded clicks climb in months when AI mentions your brand more often, and nothing else changed, that's a useful sign, not proof. The filter only appears for top-level properties with enough search volume.

When AI Mentions Your Brand Too Rarely

If the six places show little or nothing, the next step is diagnosis, not more looking. The 15-minute audit scores recall and discovery across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, then matches what you saw to a likely cause and a fix. For an ongoing program with panel sizes and margins of error, read our guide to measuring GEO.

Rankbox doesn't track AI mentions or citations today, so it isn't a seventh place to look. It helps with the fix. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask AI about your category, and the Citation-Ready Writer writes source-backed articles for the ones you're missing, delivered to your site through Rankbox's API. Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I see if AI mentions your brand for free?

All six places are free: ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, Google's AI features with Search Console's generative AI report, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, GA4 and Search Console's branded queries filter. Only the answers themselves show unlinked mentions and rivals.

Does Google Search Console show AI mentions?

Not mentions as such. Its generative AI performance report counts impressions when links to your site appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. A mention of your brand without a link to your site isn't counted, and the report shows no clicks.

Can I see ChatGPT citations in Bing Webmaster Tools?

Not as such. Microsoft says the AI Performance report covers Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and "select partner AI integrations" without naming the partners. Check ChatGPT by reading its sources directly, and use GA4 to count the visits it sends.

Does GA4 show which AI mentioned my brand?

Only when someone clicks. GA4's AI Assistant channel records the assistant that sent a visit, such as ChatGPT or Gemini. It doesn't show the prompt, the answer or any mention that didn't lead to a click. Check Referral for Perplexity visits.

How often should I check these six places?

Monthly is enough for most teams. Look at the two Search Console reports, Bing's AI Performance report and GA4 at the start of each month, and spot-check a few answers in ChatGPT and Perplexity. For trends you can trust, pair them with a repeat of the same prompt audit.
