The short answer
Yes: since 9 February 2026, ChatGPT has shown paid ads below some of its answers, including answers built from a web search, to people on the Free and Go plans. Each ad carries a "Sponsored" label and sits under the answer, never inside it. As of 30 September 2026, OpenAI says the ads run in more than 60 countries.
So if you're asking "does ChatGPT search have paid ads?" because you saw a sponsored card under an answer, you saw a real ad. If you pay for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, you won't see one at all. That split is why people's reports differ.
Below is the evidence with dates, who sees the ads, a quick way to tell a paid placement from an earned recommendation, and what OpenAI says about ads and bias. For the bigger picture, including Google's and Microsoft's AI ads and where this is heading, read our guide to how conversational PPC will work.
Key Takeaways
- Does ChatGPT search have paid ads? Yes. ChatGPT started showing ads in a US test on 9 February 2026, and OpenAI says they now run in more than 60 countries.
- Ads appear below the end of an answer with a "Sponsored" label. The answer text, its Sources list and shopping product results aren't ads.
- Free and Go users and signed-out visitors can see ads. Paid plans, Temporary Chats and accounts flagged as under 18 don't.
- OpenAI says ads run on separate systems and that advertisers "have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses."
- An outside check fits the separation: in SE Ranking's July 2026 sample, the advertiser wasn't cited in the answer above its ad in 96.37% of placements.
Does ChatGPT Search Have Paid Ads? The Evidence, With Dates
Every item below is OpenAI's own statement, read on 30 September 2026.
- 16 January 2026: the plan. OpenAI published its approach to advertising and said it would test ads "at the bottom of answers in ChatGPT when there's a relevant sponsored product or service."
- 9 February 2026: the first ads. OpenAI's test announcement says: "Today, we're beginning to test ads in ChatGPT in the U.S." The test covered logged-in adults on Free and Go.
- 5 May 2026: open buying. OpenAI let businesses buy directly through a beta self-serve Ads Manager and added pay-per-click bidding.
- 31 August 2026: scale. OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate "in less than 200 days after launch."
- 23 September 2026: reach. After launching in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads "are now available in over 60 countries."
What about search specifically? OpenAI's ads help page says ads "can appear below the end of a response," and it makes no exception for responses that used web search. Its web search help page doesn't mention ads either way. So an answer with cited web sources can carry an ad below it, like any other answer.
An outside count agrees that they're common. SE Ranking's ChatGPT ads study ran 50,006 commercial prompts on 23 July 2026 and found an ad under 25.94% of the answers. In short, the answer to "does ChatGPT search have paid ads" changed from no to yes on 9 February 2026.
Does ChatGPT Search Have Paid Ads for Everyone?
No. Whether you see ads depends on your plan, your age and the kind of chat.
| Your situation | Do you see ads? |
|---|---|
| Free or Go plan, signed in | Yes, when a relevant ad matches the chat |
| Not signed in | Yes, limited to ads suitable for all audiences |
| Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu | No |
| Account identified as under 18 | No |
| Temporary Chat | No |
| Chat about personal health, mental health or politics | No |
| Free plan switched to Ads-Free | No, but with lower message limits |
All rows come from the same OpenAI help page. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, ads aren't personalized at first, so they rely on the current chat.
How to Tell an Ad From an Organic Recommendation
A brand can show up in a ChatGPT answer two ways. It can earn a mention in the answer, or it can pay for the slot below. Here's a quick way to sort them, which we call the Sponsored-or-Earned Check. Each row follows how OpenAI describes ads and answers.
| Signal | Paid ad | Organic recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Label | Says "Sponsored" | No label |
| Position | Below the end of the answer, set apart | Inside the answer text |
| Menu | Three-dot menu with "About this ad," "Hide ad" and "Report ad" | No ad menu |
| Sources | Sits apart from the answer and its Sources | Cited pages appear under Sources |
| Product cards | Ad units only | Shopping results "are not ads," per OpenAI |
| Chat with a brand | A Sponsored Agent opens a separate, labelled chat | ChatGPT's own answer in your chat |
The product card row trips people up. When you shop in ChatGPT, it can show a carousel of products. OpenAI's shopping help page says those product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." A sponsored product card from an advertiser's feed is a different thing, and it carries the "Sponsored" label.
The last row is new. On 16 September 2026, OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents, which let you chat with "an AI representative of a business" after clicking an ad. OpenAI says that chat stays "separate from the original conversation."
A worked example with Tallyfold
Tallyfold is a fictional invoicing app for agencies, with fictional rivals Brindlework and Kestrelyn. A Free user asks: "What's the best invoicing tool for a 12-person design agency?"
- The answer recommends Brindlework and Tallyfold, and explains why.
- The Sources list shows a review site and Tallyfold's pricing page.
- Below the answer, a card from Kestrelyn carries a "Sponsored" label.
Run the check. Brindlework's mention is earned. Tallyfold's mention and its cited pricing page are earned. Kestrelyn's card is paid. Kestrelyn reached this user, but not the answer, and a Plus subscriber asking the same question would never see its card. That pattern matches SE Ranking's data: in 96.37% of placements, the advertiser wasn't among the answer's cited sources.
What OpenAI Says About Ads Influencing Answers
The next question after "does ChatGPT search have paid ads" is whether those ads bend the answer. OpenAI's position is plain, and it repeats it across its ads pages. Here's the core, from its help center: "No. Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses."
Four more statements fill in the details:
- ChatGPT doesn't see the ad. "By default, ChatGPT can't see the ads shown to you." You have to share it using "Ask ChatGPT."
- Advertisers can't steer that follow-up. "Advertisers do not influence ChatGPT's responses about ads that are shared in the chat."
- Going ad-free doesn't change answers. On Ads-Free, OpenAI says, "ChatGPT responses are generated independently. Ads are not integrated into responses."
- An ad isn't an endorsement. "Seeing an ad doesn't mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser."
One thing does use your chat: picking the ad. OpenAI's ad system considers "the context and intent of your current conversation." With personalization on, it can also use past chats and memory. That shapes which ad you see, not what the answer says. You can turn personalization off in Settings under Ads controls.
Can you verify any of this? Not directly. Nobody outside OpenAI can inspect its systems. What you can check is the outcome, and the outside data above fits OpenAI's claim. It doesn't prove it.
What This Means If You Want ChatGPT to Recommend You
Buying an ad doesn't put you in the answer. The answer comes from the pages ChatGPT reads, and it's the only part every user sees, including the paid-plan users who never see ads. Frequently Asked Questions
Does ChatGPT search have paid ads outside the US?
Yes. Ads started in the US on 9 February 2026, then spread to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, India, 31 European countries and Southeast Asia. OpenAI said on 23 September 2026 that ChatGPT Ads were available in more than 60 countries.
Does ChatGPT search have paid ads on Plus?
No. Plus and Pro subscribers see no ads, and neither do Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts. Ads show only on the Free and Go plans and to signed-out visitors. Free users can also turn ads off in exchange for lower message limits.
Does ChatGPT search have paid ads inside the answer?
No. OpenAI places ads below the end of a response, labelled "Sponsored" and visually separated. It says advertisers can't shape, rank or alter what the answer says, and that shopping product results aren't ads either.
Does ChatGPT search have paid ads in its cited sources?
No paid placement in the Sources list has been announced. OpenAI's rules say ads are separate from answers, and SE Ranking found the advertiser's exact URL cited in only 0.09% of the answers its ads appeared under.
Can I turn off ads in ChatGPT?
Yes. Upgrade to Plus or Pro, or switch the Free plan to Ads-Free, which lowers your message limits. Temporary Chats also show no ads. Turning off ad personalization doesn't remove ads. It only stops other chats, ad history and topics from shaping them.
Why don't I see ads in ChatGPT?
You may be on a paid plan, in a Temporary Chat, or in a chat about a sensitive topic. Or no relevant ad matched your conversation. In SE Ranking's July 2026 sample, three in four commercial prompts showed no ad.
