The short answer

ChatGPT already shows ads. Since 9 February 2026, OpenAI has placed sponsored units below some ChatGPT answers for people on its Free and Go plans, and by late September it said those ads run in more than 60 countries. So the wave isn't coming. The first one has landed, and conversational PPC (pay-per-click ads sold against what people say in a chat, not what they type in a search box) is now a real channel with a real auction.

What's still coming is the second wave of conversational PPC: ads you can talk to, ads placed on the answer's own list of picks, and bids priced on intent that builds up over a whole conversation. OpenAI started testing ads that open a chat with a brand's own agent on 16 September 2026. Google is testing ads that sit inside AI Mode's recommendation lists. Microsoft already places ads inside Copilot's answers.

This guide covers what exists today on each platform, checked on the vendors' own pages on 30 September 2026. Then it compares conversational PPC with Google's keyword auction, gives our own forecast (labelled as ours), and explains why the unpaid answer matters more once ads sit beside it. For the buyer's view of ChatGPT's ads alone, read ChatGPT search ads: what exists and who can buy. For the one-line answer, see does ChatGPT search have paid ads.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT has shown ads since 9 February 2026. They sit below answers, carry a "Sponsored" label, and appear only for Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see none.
  • OpenAI sells conversational PPC through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Advertisers write "context hints" instead of keywords, and OpenAI says hints are not exact-match keywords or targeting rules.
  • Perplexity began selling sponsored questions in November 2024, then phased them out. In February 2026 it said it had no plans to bring them back.
  • Google shows ads above, below and inside AI Overviews, and is testing ads placed on AI Mode's own recommendation lists. Microsoft places ads inside Copilot's responses, and advertisers can't opt out.
  • In SE Ranking's July 2026 sample of 50,006 commercial prompts, 25.94% of ChatGPT answers carried an ad. In 96.37% of those, the advertiser wasn't cited in the answer.
  • Our forecast: by the end of 2027, conversational PPC will mean ads that open a chat and more than one ad per answer. Paid citations inside ChatGPT's answer are unlikely, because they would break OpenAI's own published rules.
  • The unpaid recommendation is the only placement every user sees, including the paid-plan buyers who never see ads. As conversational PPC grows, that placement is worth more, not less.

ChatGPT: live, growing, and sold by auction

OpenAI announced its plan on 16 January 2026 and began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February. The test was for "logged-in adult users on the Free and Go subscription tiers." Its ads help page now says ads "can appear below the end of a response," are "clearly labeled as sponsored," and won't show to accounts identified as under 18. Temporary Chats show no ads, and ads don't appear in the ChatGPT Atlas browser during the test.

Its advertiser guide, Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics, lists each ad's parts: advertiser name, logo, title, copy, image and landing page. Buyers pick Views (CPM), Clicks (CPC) or Conversions, and OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 a click.

Perplexity: first in, then out

Perplexity began experimenting with advertising on 12 November 2024. Its formats were "sponsored follow-up questions and paid media positioned to the side of an answer." Perplexity said its own system still wrote the answers.

On 18 February 2026, MacRumors reported, citing the Financial Times, that the ads "phased out last year" and executives didn't plan to revisit them. "A user needs to believe this is the best possible answer," one executive said. Perplexity's cookie policy now says it "will not use these technologies to sell third party ads on our services." As of 30 September 2026, Perplexity has no advertiser sign-up page that we could find.

Google's ads and AI Overviews help page says ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all 200+ markets that have them. Ads inside the Overview run in English in 12 countries, including the US, Canada, India and Australia. Google weighs "both the user query as well as the content of the AI Overview," and advertisers can't target or opt out of that placement. When Google put ads inside Overviews in October 2024, it said they would keep its "Sponsored" label.

AI Mode is further along than most people think. Google said in May 2025 that ads "may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses." On 20 May 2026 it announced two new AI Mode formats in testing. Conversational Discovery ads rewrite the ad to answer the person's question. Highlighted Answers let "highly relevant, high-quality ads" appear on AI Mode's own list of recommendations. That second one is the closest thing yet to a paid slot in the answer. For how AI Mode changes clicks overall, see our AI Mode vs. traditional search analysis.

Microsoft Copilot: ads inside the response

Microsoft's ads in Copilot help page, last updated 19 June 2026, says ads "are displayed in Copilot's responses." They're built from your existing campaign assets. "Advertisers cannot opt out," and Microsoft doesn't yet report Copilot-specific metrics. In March 2025, Microsoft said ads had "fully ramped" in English, French and German markets. Our Copilot guide covers how Copilot picks its sources.

Two others are worth a line. Anthropic said on 4 February 2026 that "Claude will remain ad-free." And MacRumors noted in February that Google hadn't put ads in the Gemini app.

How ChatGPT Ads Grew in Eight Months

OpenAI built its conversational PPC business in eight months. This timeline uses only OpenAI's own posts and help pages.

Date (2026)What OpenAI did
16 JanuaryPublished its ads principles and said tests would start "in the coming weeks"
9 FebruaryBegan the US test for logged-in adults on Free and Go
26 MarchReported "no impact on consumer trust metrics" and planned pilots in Canada, Australia and New Zealand
5 MayOpened a beta self-serve Ads Manager and added cost-per-click bidding
11 AugustConfirmed launches in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea
31 AugustSaid ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days
31 AugustOpened self-serve buying across 31 European markets, plus India, the Middle East and North Africa
16 SeptemberBegan testing Sponsored Agents with select US advertisers
23 SeptemberExpanded to Southeast Asia and Taiwan, reaching more than 60 countries

Two things stand out. The pilot sold only on CPM, but by August OpenAI said "CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now account for the majority of campaigns." And the formats are turning conversational. A Sponsored Agent, per its help page, "lets people chat with an AI representative of a business in ChatGPT."

What OpenAI Says About Ads and Answer Independence

The whole conversational PPC model rests on one promise. Here it is in OpenAI's words, with what you can and can't check.

The five principles

OpenAI's ads principles are mission alignment, answer independence, conversation privacy, choice and control, and long-term value. The one that matters most for marketers is answer independence: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what's most helpful to you."

The help center goes further. Ads "run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." By default, "ChatGPT can't see the ads shown to you." A user has to share an ad with the chat, using "Ask ChatGPT," before the model can talk about it. Product results in shopping answers "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads," per OpenAI's shopping help page.

Where the line gets thinner

Three newer features sit closer to the answer, so watch them.

  1. Sponsored Agents. The brand's agent talks to the user. OpenAI says that chat is "distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the original conversation."
  2. AI text customization. Advertisers can opt in to let OpenAI adapt "existing headlines and descriptions to better fit the context of a conversation." The ad changes to fit the chat. The answer, per OpenAI, does not.
  3. Interface rules. OpenAI's ad policies say ads "must be clearly distinguishable from the ChatGPT product experience" and may be removed if they imitate ChatGPT's look or voice.

What you can verify yourself

You can't audit OpenAI's ad systems. You can check the outcome. SE Ranking's ChatGPT ads study, from data collected on 23 July 2026, found every ad sat below the answer as one sponsored offer. In 96.37% of placements the advertiser wasn't among the answer's cited sources. That fits OpenAI's claim, though it doesn't prove it. Microsoft makes a similar promise for Copilot, saying "organic responses are never influenced by sponsored content." Google's new AI Mode formats add an "independent AI explainer" to each ad, which is Google's version of the same idea.

How Conversational PPC Differs From the Keyword Auction

This section is Rankbox's analysis. It's built on what Google and OpenAI document, but the comparison and the conclusions are ours.

On Google Search, you bid on keywords. Google's Ad Rank blends your bid, ad quality and the context of the search. You then pay only what's needed "to beat the Ad Rank of the competitor immediately below you," per Google's actual CPC page. ChatGPT keeps the second-price idea but changes what's being auctioned. In conversational PPC, we call it the conversational intent auction: bids compete for one ad unit below an answer, matched to the meaning of the whole chat so far.

Four ways conversational PPC changes how you buy

  1. You bid on a stage, not a string. A keyword is one moment. A conversation moves from exploring to comparing to deciding, and relevance shifts each turn. Microsoft says the same of Copilot: its ads help page says it considers "the context of the entire conversation, not only the last prompt."
  2. Relevance can outweigh money. In a relevance-weighted auction, a lower bid with a better fit can win. OpenAI's own advice is to write many distinct ad variations, because "a high volume and diverse set of ads" finds more matches.
  3. You lose the search terms report. You can't see which chats triggered your ad, and hints aren't exclusions. SE Ranking found 14.35% of ChatGPT ad impressions were no closer to their prompt than a random pairing.
  4. One slot raises the stakes. Google can show four ads at the top. ChatGPT showed one sponsored offer per answer in SE Ranking's July sample, so second place often means no place.

A worked example: one conversation, three auctions

Here's how that plays out for Tallyfold, a fictional invoicing app for agencies, against its fictional rivals Brindlework and Kestrelyn. OpenAI hasn't published its scoring formula, so this uses the classic model as an illustration: score equals max bid times a relevance score from 0 to 1. The winner pays the runner-up's score divided by its own relevance, rounded up to the cent.

Bids stay fixed all conversation: Tallyfold $4.00, Brindlework $3.00, Kestrelyn $5.00.

TurnWhat the user saysRelevance (T / B / K)Scores (T / B / K)Winner and price
1. Exploring"How do agencies usually bill retainers?"0.30 / 0.35 / 0.401.20 / 1.05 / 2.00Kestrelyn pays 1.20 ÷ 0.40 = $3.00
2. Comparing"Which invoicing apps handle retainers and multi-currency for a 12-person agency?"0.80 / 0.50 / 0.603.20 / 1.50 / 3.00Tallyfold pays 3.00 ÷ 0.80 = $3.75
3. Deciding"Does Tallyfold connect to Xero, and what does it cost?"0.90 / 0.20 / 0.253.60 / 0.60 / 1.25Tallyfold pays 1.25 ÷ 0.90 = $1.39

Same bids, three different auctions. Kestrelyn's high bid only wins while the chat is vague. Tallyfold wins once the conversation matches what it actually does, and pays least at the moment the buyer is closest to deciding. The lesson isn't the exact numbers, which are made up. It's that in conversational PPC your bid buys a stage of the conversation, and your fit decides which stage you can afford.

Our Forecast: How Conversational PPC Will Work by the End of 2027

Everything above is documented. This section is not: it's where we think conversational PPC goes next. We keep three things apart here: what vendors have announced, what analysts project, and what we expect.

What vendors have announced

  • OpenAI says that "over the next few months" it will "build new formats, optimization tools, and measurement solutions," per its September expansion post. In August it said it will "explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT."
  • Google is testing Highlighted Answers, Conversational Discovery ads and a Business Agent for Leads that "puts a smart brand agent right inside your ad," per its Marketing Live post.
  • Microsoft said in March 2025 that "brand agents will be integrated into the Showroom ads." In April 2026 it added Offer Highlights, which surface "context-aware offers" in Copilot.

What analysts project

EMARKETER's US AI Advertising Forecast 2026, by Nate Elliott (4 June 2026), is the most detailed public projection available. It says more than 80% of US AI advertising in 2026 "will appear next to AI content," such as search ads beside AI Overviews, rather than inside chatbots. It projects US AI ad spending will reach $68.25 billion by 2030. It also expects ads inside search engine chatbots such as AI Mode to grow faster than ads on standalone chatbots such as ChatGPT. EMARKETER builds its forecasts from public company data, research firms and expert interviews, as MediaPost described its first AI search estimate. It's a US-only model, and the full report is paywalled.

You'll often read that conversational ads and sponsored citations are inevitable. Half of that has already happened: ChatGPT runs ads, and they're turning conversational. The other half, sponsored citations, is the one we think is least likely. It would contradict what OpenAI, Microsoft and Google have each promised in writing.

One more wild card: agents. Microsoft's April post says agents "don't browse, scroll, or respond to advertising." If more buying moves to agents, ads may matter less at the final step, and the facts an agent can read matter more. Our guide to conversational buyer stages covers that handoff, and our prompt-zero purchase analysis looks at what agents need from a software site.

What Conversational PPC Means for Organic Visibility

When conversational PPC sits beside answers, the unpaid recommendation gains value. Four documented facts explain why.

Many buyers never see an ad

Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users see no ChatGPT ads. For B2B software, that's a big share of the people you sell to. SE Ranking ran its own ChatGPT campaigns and got 1,263 clicks at a 1.30% click-through rate, but "very few sign-ups." Its PPC specialist blamed audience fit: the more someone looks like its ideal customer, "the more likely they're on a paid, ad-free plan."

Most answers carry no ad at all

In SE Ranking's snapshot, 74.06% of commercial ChatGPT answers had no ad. Perplexity and Claude show none. When there's no ad, the answer is the only thing on screen.

Paying doesn't buy your way into the answer

In SE Ranking's ChatGPT data, the advertiser's exact URL was cited in just 12 answers, or 0.09%. Its AI Mode ads study went further: "When we controlled for brand strength, buying an ad gave no citation advantage." Ads and answers really do run on separate tracks, so your budget can't fix a weak organic presence.

The answer comes first, the ad comes after

A ChatGPT ad sits below the answer, so the answer names its shortlist first. If you're on it, your ad backs it up. If a rival is, your ad arrives as a second opinion. It's the zero-click search pattern again, which our zero-click data roundup tracks: the answer does most of the work before anyone clicks.

What to do this quarter

  1. Find out where ads appear on your prompts. Run 20 to 30 buyer prompts on a signed-in Free account and note which answers carry an ad and who bought it. Our AI Visibility Prompt Kit gives you a starting list.
  2. Win the unpaid answer first. Publish the pages ChatGPT reads when it builds a shortlist: fair comparisons (see our comparison page formula) and a pricing page it can quote (see hallucination by omission).
  3. Keep paid and earned apart in analytics. OpenAI says UTM parameters persist on ad clicks. Tag ads with the UTM link builder and read organic clicks as AI referral traffic, as our ChatGPT traffic analysis guide shows.
  4. Make ad and answer agree. If your ad says $29 and the answer quotes an old $39, the buyer trusts neither.
  5. Don't block OpenAI's ad bots. OpenAI's ad creative guide says landing pages "must not block OpenAI user agents (OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot)."

Where Rankbox Fits Next to Conversational PPC

Rankbox doesn't sell or manage ads, and it doesn't track AI citations today. It works on the unpaid side: it finds the questions buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, then writes 2,000 to 3,500-word, source-backed articles with its Citation-Ready Writer. Those are the pages AI answers read when they build a shortlist. Articles reach your site through Rankbox's API.

If you run conversational PPC, Rankbox covers the half your ad budget can't buy: being in the answer itself. Plans start with a free signup, and the Business plan is $49.50 a month for 30 articles. See pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChatGPT show ads?

Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026 and says they now run in more than 60 countries. They appear below some answers for Free and Go users, labelled "Sponsored." Paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu see no ads. Our direct answer has the details.

What is conversational PPC?

Conversational PPC is pay-per-click advertising sold against the meaning of a chat, not a typed keyword. In ChatGPT, advertisers write context hints and bid in a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. The ad shows below the answer when the conversation fits. Most campaigns now pay per click or optimize for conversions.

How much does conversational PPC cost in ChatGPT?

In ChatGPT, conversational PPC starts at a $25 minimum daily budget in the US, and OpenAI suggests a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click, as of September 2026. You can also buy by impressions or optimize for conversions. OpenAI says it has no performance benchmarks across advertisers yet.

Do ads influence ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. Its help center says ads "run on separate systems from our chat model" and advertisers "have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." You can't audit that directly, but in SE Ranking's July 2026 sample, the advertiser wasn't cited in the answer in 96.37% of ad placements.

Does Perplexity have ads?

No. Perplexity started sponsored follow-up questions in November 2024, then phased them out. In February 2026 its executives said they didn't plan to bring ads back, and its cookie policy says it won't sell third-party ads on its services.

Are there ads in Google AI Mode?

Yes. Google said in May 2025 that ads may appear below and inside AI Mode responses, and SE Ranking found a text ad on 29.45% of US commercial queries in June 2026. In May 2026 Google began testing two new formats, including Highlighted Answers, which place ads on AI Mode's recommendation lists.
