The short answer

ChatGPT search ads exist, and any eligible business can buy them. Since 9 February 2026, OpenAI has shown sponsored units below ChatGPT's answers to people on the Free and Go plans. As of September 2026 the ads run in more than 60 countries, and businesses buy them through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager (still in beta), an agency, or OpenAI's sales team.

One naming point first. OpenAI doesn't sell a separate "search" ad. It sells ChatGPT Ads, and the same unit can appear under any answer when the chat fits, whether or not ChatGPT searched the web to write it. OpenAI's web search help page doesn't mention ads at all. So when people search for ChatGPT search ads, what they'll find is this one ad product.

This is the practical view: where the ads appear, what they look like, who can buy them and what they cost. For the wider story, including Google, Microsoft and Perplexity, the auction mechanics and our forecast, read our guide to how conversational PPC will work.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT search ads appear below the end of an answer, labelled "Sponsored." They never appear inside the answer text or in shopping results.
  • Only Free and Go users see them, plus signed-out visitors, who get ads suitable for all audiences. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free.
  • Any business whose legal entity sits in one of the countries on OpenAI's availability list can buy through Ads Manager. As of 30 September 2026, 63 countries were marked "Available."
  • You target with context hints, not keywords. You pay per thousand views, per click, or optimize for a conversion, with a $25 minimum daily budget in the US.
  • In SE Ranking's July 2026 sample, 25.94% of commercial prompts showed an ad, always one offer below the answer.
  • Check your audience before you spend: if your buyers use paid ChatGPT plans at work, they won't see your ad.

Where ChatGPT Search Ads Appear, and Where They Don't

Most confusion about ChatGPT search ads comes from who sees them. The rules below come from OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT help page, its ad policies and its shopping help page, read on 30 September 2026.

Place or userCan an ad show? What OpenAI says

Two more details matter for planning. First, personalized ads aren't available at first in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, so ads there rely on the current chat alone. Second, advertisers can target by device: Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app and iOS web, per OpenAI's campaign setup guide.

How often ChatGPT search ads show up

OpenAI doesn't publish an ad load. The best outside count is SE Ranking's ChatGPT ads study. It ran 50,006 commercial prompts across 20 US niches on 23 July 2026, and 12,974 of them returned an ad: 25.94%. Every ad sat below the answer as a single sponsored offer, with no rival beside it.

Treat that as a snapshot. The same prompt can show an ad in one session and none in the next. And SE Ranking judged 14.35% of the ads it saw to be off-topic, so matching is still rough.

What a ChatGPT Search Ad Looks Like

A standard unit has six parts, per OpenAI's ads basics for advertisers:

  1. The advertiser's name.
  2. A favicon, the small logo.
  3. A title, the headline.
  4. Copy, a short description.
  5. An image.
  6. The landing page the ad links to.

The unit sits under the answer, visually separated from it, with a "Sponsored" label. A three-dot menu lets the user hide the ad, report it, open "About this ad" to see why it showed, or pick "Ask ChatGPT" to share the ad with the chat. By default, OpenAI says, "ChatGPT can't see the ads shown to you."

Product feed ads

Retailers can upload a product feed and build ads from the catalog. These units show product images, titles, stars, prices, sale prices and the brand, per OpenAI's product feed guide. One catch: feed products are eligible for ads only during the beta. "They will not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations," OpenAI says.

This newer format lets a user "chat with an AI representative of a business in ChatGPT," opened from an ad. OpenAI began testing it on 16 September 2026 with select US advertisers. Its help page says it's in "a limited alpha test," and OpenAI isn't taking early-access requests.

Copy that adapts to the chat

In the same September announcement, OpenAI added an opt-in feature that adapts an advertiser's headlines and descriptions "to better fit the context of a conversation" and translates them. Ads Manager can also suggest copy and images from your landing page, which you review before use.

Who Can Buy ChatGPT Search Ads, and How

Who's eligible

For self-serve buying, "the legal entity that will advertise and be billed must be based in a country listed as available," per OpenAI's availability page. On 30 September 2026 that list had 63 countries marked "Available," including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Japan, Brazil, Mexico and most of the EU. New self-serve accounts may start out limited to their home country. They unlock other countries after identity checks and some spend there.

Category matters too. OpenAI's ad policies say the early program is "primarily limited to consumer verticals" such as household goods, local services, travel and digital products. Financial, health and legal advertisers are approved case by case, and financial and health ads outside the US are generally prohibited. Adult content, alcohol, gambling and political ads aren't allowed.

Three ways in

  • Ads Manager (beta). Sign up at ads.openai.com, add payment details and run campaigns yourself. OpenAI opened it in May 2026.
  • Agencies and OpenAI's sales team. OpenAI's September expansion post names dentsu, Havas Media, Omnicom Media, Publicis Groupe and WPP among its agency partners, plus an in-house Ads Solutions team for larger buyers.
  • Tools you may already use. HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, and US Shopify merchants got a ChatGPT Ads app, both announced on 16 September.

Setting up your first campaign

  1. Create the account at ads.openai.com, verify your business and add billing.
  2. Pick an objective. Views bills per 1,000 impressions (CPM). Clicks bills per click (CPC). Conversions optimizes toward a purchase, sign-up or lead, billed by click or impression. You never pay per conversion.
  3. Set budget, dates and places. Choose a daily or campaign-total budget, the countries, and optionally platforms and custom audiences.
  4. Build ad groups with context hints. A hint describes what you sell, who it helps and when it's useful. OpenAI's hints guide says hints "are not targeting rules or delivery instructions."
  5. Write several distinct ads per group. OpenAI's creative guide says to "build for coverage," with each variation taking a different angle.
  6. Open your landing pages to OpenAI's bots. Pages "must not block OpenAI user agents (OAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot)." If you use Cloudflare, check our guide to why Cloudflare blocks ChatGPT.
  7. Add measurement. Install the OpenAI pixel or the Conversions API, and add UTM tags. OpenAI says static UTM parameters "persist on ad clicks."
  8. Launch after review. Ads must pass review before they serve.

What ChatGPT search ads cost

For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends "starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 USD per click." The minimum daily budget is $25 in the US, €15 in the eurozone and £15 in the UK. A daily budget is an average: spend can reach twice the daily amount on a given day, but not more than seven times it across a Sunday-to-Saturday week. OpenAI says the platform "does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers," per its advertiser FAQ.

The ChatGPT Ads Pre-Flight Check

Before you spend, run these six questions. We built this checklist from OpenAI's rules above and one hard lesson from early buyers.

QuestionWhy it mattersYou pass if
Do your buyers use Free or Go?Paid and work plans never see adsA real share of buyers use free ChatGPT
Is your category allowed? Many regulated categories are blocked or reviewed by handYou sell consumer goods, local services, travel, digital products or education
Is your entity in an available country?Self-serve needs a local legal entityYour country is marked "Available"
Can OpenAI's bots reach your landing page?Blocked pages can fail reviewOAI-AdsBot and OAI-SearchBot get a 200 response
Can you separate paid from organic clicks?Untagged ad visits blur into organic ChatGPT visitsEvery ad URL carries its own UTM medium
Can you afford a real test?Small tests can't tell signal from noiseYou can fund 30 days at more than the minimum

The first question is the one that bites. SE Ranking ran its own ChatGPT campaigns and got 1,263 clicks at a 1.30% click-through rate, but "very few sign-ups." Its PPC specialist's explanation: "the more someone looks like our ICP, the more likely they're on a paid, ad-free plan."

A worked example: Tallyfold's 30-day test

Tallyfold is a fictional invoicing app for agencies. These numbers are illustrative, not benchmarks.

  • Budget: $40 a day for 30 days = $1,200.
  • Clicks: at an average actual CPC of $3.20, that buys 1,200 ÷ 3.20 = 375 clicks.
  • Trials: if 4% of clicks start a trial, that's 375 × 0.04 = 15 trials.
  • Customers: if 20% of trials convert, that's 15 × 0.20 = 3 customers.
  • Cost per customer: $1,200 ÷ 3 = $400.

If a Tallyfold customer is worth $1,500 over their lifetime, $400 is fine. But the whole sum rests on the trial rate. Suppose most agency finance leads use ChatGPT Business at work and only see Tallyfold's ads on personal Free accounts. The trial rate could drop to 1%, leaving 3.75 trials and 0.75 of a customer. A test that small tells you nothing, which is why the audience question comes first.

What's Announced Next for ChatGPT Search Ads

OpenAI has said three things about what's coming. Its help page already allows an ad unit to feature "one or more items from an advertiser, or multiple advertisers," so expect more than one sponsor below some answers. Sponsored Agents are in alpha. And on 23 September OpenAI said it will "build new formats, optimization tools, and measurement solutions" over the next few months.

Whatever changes, OpenAI's stated rule is that ads stay out of the answer. Its help page says advertisers "have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT's responses." For a direct yes-or-no on that question, see does ChatGPT search have paid ads. For what earns the unpaid mention above the ad, see how ChatGPT search decides citations.

Where Rankbox Fits

Rankbox doesn't buy, sell or manage ChatGPT search ads, and it doesn't track AI citations today. It works on the answer that sits above the ad. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask ChatGPT, and the Citation-Ready Writer researches the live web and drafts 2,000 to 3,500-word, source-backed articles for those questions. If you do run ads, pair them with pages that can win the unpaid mention too. See pricing for the Business plan at $49.50 a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can any business buy ChatGPT search ads?

Most can, if the business's legal entity is in a country OpenAI lists as available and the category is allowed. As of 30 September 2026, 63 countries were marked available. Adult content, alcohol, gambling and political ads are barred, and finance, health and legal ads need case-by-case approval.

How much do ChatGPT search ads cost?

OpenAI suggests a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click to start, with a $25 minimum daily budget in the US, as of September 2026. You can also buy on impressions or optimize for conversions. Actual prices come from the auction, and OpenAI has published no benchmarks.

Do Plus users see ChatGPT search ads?

No. Plus and Pro subscribers are ad-free, as are Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts. Ads reach Free and Go users and signed-out visitors. Free users can also switch to an Ads-Free mode in exchange for lower message limits.

Are ChatGPT search ads keyword-targeted?

No. You write context hints that describe what you offer, who it helps and when it's useful. OpenAI says hints "are not exact-match keywords" and don't guarantee delivery. The system matches ads to the meaning of the conversation, plus past chats and memory when a user allows personalization.

Can I see which chats triggered my ad?

No. Advertisers get aggregated numbers such as impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and conversions. OpenAI says advertisers never see a user's chats, memories or personal details.

How do I track ChatGPT search ads in GA4?

Add UTM parameters with your own medium, such as cpc, to every ad's landing page URL. OpenAI says they persist on ad clicks. Our UTM link builder builds them, and our ChatGPT traffic analysis guide shows how to keep paid rows out of organic counts.
