What Is Generative Engine Optimization? A GEO Tools List for 2026
What generative engine optimization is, plus a GEO tools list sorted by job: tracking, content, crawl access, schema, llms.txt and mentions, free options first.

The short answer
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named, and your pages cited, inside answers written by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. GEO tools split into six jobs: tracking what answers say, creating pages worth quoting, opening crawl access, adding structured data, publishing llms.txt, and earning mentions on other sites. Almost every job has a free option good enough to start with.
Which job to fund first depends on what's broken. Our AEO audit guide scores 20 points across these same areas, so run it before you buy anything. This list then gives you a tool for each failing point, with every price as listed on the vendor's page on 29 September 2026.
Keep one fact in mind while you shop. Google's AI optimization guide says "no third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." GEO tools watch answers from the outside, fix your site, or help you publish. None of them can switch a citation on.
Key Takeaways
- GEO means earning mentions and citations inside AI answers. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that reported gains of up to 40% in visibility.
- Sort GEO tools by job: tracking, content, technical access, structured data, llms.txt, and mentions and PR.
- Free first-party reports come first. Bing Webmaster Tools counts Copilot citations, and Search Console counts AI Overviews impressions.
- Paid entry points on 29 September 2026 ran from $9.99 a month (F5Bot Silver, for Reddit alerts) to $199 a month billed yearly (Brand24, for mention monitoring).
- Structured data and llms.txt rarely need paid tools. Google says neither is required for its AI features.
- Buy for the symptom you can see, and test a tool on your own pages before you commit.
Generative Engine Optimization in One Paragraph
The phrase comes from "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", a paper first posted in November 2023 by researchers from Princeton and other institutions. Its authors reported that changing how content is written "can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses." In practice, GEO keeps the SEO base (crawlable, indexed, useful pages) and aims at a different prize: a place inside the answer, not a blue link below it. For the full explainer, with GEO vs SEO vs AEO, read our plain-English guide to generative engine optimization. The glossary entry on answer engine optimization covers the narrower term.
The GEO Tools List, Job by Job
Here is the whole list on one table. Paid prices are the entry plans on each vendor's page on 29 September 2026, billed monthly unless noted.
| Job | The question it answers | Free option | Paid example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracking | Do AI answers name or cite you? | Bing AI Performance, Search Console, Semrush's free checker | Otterly.AI Lite, $29 a month |
| Content | Do you have pages worth quoting? | Rankbox's citation readiness checker | Frase Starter, $49 a month |
| Technical and crawl access | Can AI bots fetch your pages? | Cloudflare AI Crawl Control, Rankbox's robots.txt tester | Screaming Frog, $279 a year |
| Structured data | Can machines read who you are? | Schema Markup Validator, Rankbox's schema generator | Rarely needed |
| llms.txt | Can agents find your key pages? | Rankbox's llms.txt generator, Yoast SEO | Rarely needed |
| Mentions and PR | Do other sites vouch for you? | F5Bot, Qwoted Basic | Qwoted Pro, $149 a month |
1. Tracking: are AI answers naming you?
Tracking tools run buyer prompts in AI engines and record who gets named and cited. Start with the two reports the engines' owners give you. Bing's AI Performance report counts your citations across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, with the grounding queries behind them. Search Console's generative AI report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
For other engines, two free checks give a quick read. Semrush's AI visibility checker covers ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, three times a day with no account. HubSpot's AI Search Grader is free and asks GPT-5.4 mini, Perplexity and Gemini how they describe your brand "based on its training data," so it reflects what models learned rather than a live search.
Paid trackers run the same prompts every day. On 29 September 2026, Otterly.AI Lite listed at $29 a month for 15 prompts in four engines, Peec AI Starter at $95 for 50 prompts on three models, and SE Visible Basic at $99 for 200 prompts in five engines, with a 10-day trial. Nine trackers are compared in depth in our ChatGPT rank tracker guide, and our guide to tracking brand mentions for free covers the manual route.
2. Content: pages worth quoting
Content tools come in two kinds. Graders score a draft against pages that already rank. Content engines research and write the pages themselves.
- Free: Rankbox's AI citation readiness checker scores a draft for answer-first openings, numbers and named sources. The AI question generator and content brief generator plan the page.
- Graders: Surfer Discovery is $49 a month billed yearly, and Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month with a 14-day trial.
- Content engines: Frase Starter is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 10 articles, 50 audit pages and 50 tracked AI prompts. Rankbox is $49.50 a month for 30 articles on one site.
For how graders and engines differ, and how to score them, see our explainer on AI search optimization tools.
3. Technical and crawl access
If AI bots are blocked from a page, nothing else on this list matters. These GEO tools read robots.txt, logs and firewall settings.
- Free: Cloudflare says AI Crawl Control is "available on all plans" and shows which AI services reach your content. Rankbox's robots.txt tester, AI crawler log analyzer and AI search readiness check cover rules, log hits and pages that need JavaScript.
- Crawlers: the Screaming Frog SEO Spider is free up to 500 URLs, and a licence costs $279 a year.
- Bot analytics: Known Agents has a free plan with 100,000 events a month, and Startup is $29 a month for 1 million.
For the bots to check, see The AI Crawler Directory.
4. Structured data
Structured data tells machines who you are and what each page holds. Google says there's "no special schema.org structured data" you need for its AI features, and Bing's guidelines say markup "must accurately reflect visible content." So the work is accuracy, and free tools handle it.
- Rankbox's schema generator writes JSON-LD for ten types, including Organization and Person.
- The Schema Markup Validator, run by schema.org, checks any type.
- Google's Rich Results Test checks only the types that earn rich results in Google, so use the validator for everything else.
Our guide to building a knowledge graph for AI shows how to connect the pieces.
5. llms.txt
An llms.txt file is a Markdown list of your key pages for AI agents, proposed at llmstxt.org. Rankbox's llms.txt generator writes one in the spec's format. On WordPress, Yoast says its llms.txt feature is "free for everyone" and generated and refreshed automatically.
Set expectations first. Google says such files "will neither harm nor help" your visibility in its Search. Our post on whether llms.txt helps your SEO covers who does read it.
6. Mentions and PR
AI answers lean on what other sites say about you. In Ahrefs' December 2025 study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions correlated with AI visibility at about 0.737, and branded web mentions at 0.664 for ChatGPT. Those are correlations, not causes, but they explain why this job belongs on a GEO tools list.
- Free: F5Bot alerts you when your keywords appear on Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. Its Silver plan is $9.99 a month. Qwoted Basic is free with two pitches a month to reporters.
- Paid: Qwoted Pro is $149 a month for 35 pitches. Brand24 starts at $199 a month billed yearly, with a 14-day trial.
- Rolling out: Rankbox's Reddit Presence finds relevant threads and drafts replies for you to post yourself.
The GEO Symptom-to-Tool Map
Most teams shop for GEO tools by category. It's faster to shop by symptom. Find the row that matches what you see, start with the free tool, and pay only when the trigger in the last column is true.
| What you see | The job | Start free with | Pay when |
|---|---|---|---|
| You don't know if AI answers mention you | Tracking | Bing and Search Console AI reports, plus a hand-run prompt list | Your prompt list passes about 30 and hand runs eat an afternoon |
| A rival is cited for a question you never answered | Content | AI question generator and citation readiness checker | You know the gaps, but pages never get written |
| No AI bots appear in your logs | Technical access | robots.txt tester and log analyzer | Your site passes 500 URLs or logs need daily watching |
| Answers get your price or category wrong | Structured data | Schema generator and Schema Markup Validator | Rarely; fix the page and markup first |
| Coding agents or docs tools misread your docs | llms.txt | llms.txt generator | Rarely; the file is a one-time job |
| Cited roundups and threads leave you out | Mentions and PR | F5Bot and Qwoted Basic | You need more pitches than two a month |
How to Pick GEO Tools Without Overbuying
- Audit first. Score the 20 points in our AEO audit. The lowest area tells you which job to fund.
- Exhaust the free option for that job. Most of the free tools above take under an hour to try.
- Test before you pay. A demo shows features. Our guide on how to evaluate a GEO tool before purchasing shows how to test whether one moves your numbers, and our guide to comparing GEO software scores data accuracy.
Where Rankbox Sits on This List
Rankbox belongs in the content job, and only there. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and the Citation-Ready Writer researches the live web and writes 2,000–3,500-word source-backed articles for those gaps. Articles reach your site through Rankbox's API. Rankbox doesn't track AI citations today, so pair it with a tracker or the free first-party reports. The Business plan is $49.50 a month with a 7-day trial: see pricing. The free tools named above cost nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are GEO tools?
GEO tools are software that help your brand get named and cited in AI answers from engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. They cover six jobs: tracking answers, creating quotable pages, checking crawl access, adding structured data, publishing llms.txt and earning mentions on other sites.
Are there free GEO tools?
Yes. Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console report AI citations and impressions for free. Semrush's checker gives three free AI visibility checks a day. Cloudflare's AI Crawl Control is on all plans, and Rankbox's robots.txt tester, log analyzer, schema generator and llms.txt generator are free.
What is the best GEO tool?
There isn't one best GEO tool, because each does a different job. Trackers measure answers, and content engines write pages, though a few products such as Frase sell both. Pick the job your audit scores lowest on, then compare tools inside that job on your own prompts.
Do I need GEO tools to do generative engine optimization?
No. You can run GEO with free reports, a spreadsheet of buyer prompts and your own writing. Paid GEO tools save time once your prompt list, page count or pitch volume outgrows manual work. Start free, and pay for the job that eats the most hours.
How are GEO tools different from SEO tools?
SEO tools report rankings and clicks on a results page. GEO tools report whether AI answers name or cite you, check access for AI crawlers, and help create pages engines quote. Many vendors now sell both, so check which job a plan actually covers.
Is llms.txt a GEO tool?
An llms.txt file is one small part of GEO, not a tool in itself. It lists your key pages for AI agents that choose to read it. Google says its Search ignores the file, so treat it as optional housekeeping after crawl access and content.
