The short answer
Yes, within limits. You can track brand mentions in AI search as a rate: how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI features name your brand across many runs of many prompts. You can't track the one exact answer a particular buyer saw, and nobody can see inside a buyer's logged-in, personalized session.
That split decides what a tracker can promise you. AI answers are generated fresh on every run, so a screenshot is one sample, not a result. For the mechanics behind this (temperature, seeds, shifting search results and the math of repeated runs), read our technical explainer on tracking brand mentions in AI answers.
This page is the practical answer for someone deciding whether to start. It covers what you can and can't track, which engines give you an official API and which only have an app, what their terms say about automated checks, and what "accurate" should mean on a report you pay for.
Key Takeaways
- You can track brand mentions in AI search as a rate across many prompts and runs, reported with a margin of error. You can't track a single answer.
- No tool can see a logged-in buyer's personalized answer. Every tracker measures a clean reference session instead.
- OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity sell APIs that search the web, but API answers aren't guaranteed to match their apps. Google documents no API for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- OpenAI's and Anthropic's consumer terms bar automated extraction from their apps, and the APIs are the sanctioned route. Ask any tracker how it collects answers.
- An accurate report states its sample, conditions, engine and dates, and gives a range, such as "38%, likely 32% to 44%," never a single rank.
What You Can Track, and What You Can't
Most confusion when teams try to track brand mentions comes from mixing up two questions. "Does ChatGPT recommend us?" has no fixed answer. "How often does ChatGPT recommend us for these buying questions?" does. The table below sorts the things marketers ask for.
The Trackability Table
| What you want to know | Trackable? | How to get it | What limits it |
|---|---|---|---|
| How often an engine names your brand for buying questions | Yes, as a rate | A fixed prompt panel, run many times, pooled by month | Margin of error, roughly ±5 to ±10 points at 100 to 400 answers |
| Which pages get cited when brands in your category are named | Yes, as a frequency | Log every cited URL per answer | Cited sources churn from run to run |
| Your share of the brands named, against rivals | Yes | Log every brand in every answer | Needs the same prompts for all brands |
| How often Copilot cites your pages | Yes, first-party | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Microsoft's counts, not other engines |
| How often your pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Partly | Search Console's generative AI report | Impressions only, no brand mentions |
| Visits that AI answers send you | Yes | GA4's AI Assistant channel or a custom channel | Misses visits with no referrer |
| The exact answer one buyer saw yesterday | No | Nothing records it for you | Every answer is a fresh draw |
| What a logged-in, personalized user sees | No | Nothing can | Memory, history and location are private |
| A fixed "rank" inside ChatGPT | No | Track average position across runs instead | Order changes on almost every run |
Trackable: rates, sources and first-party counts
To track brand mentions honestly, count rates. They hold steady even when single answers don't. In SparkToro's January 2026 study, the lists of brands almost never repeated, yet the authors concluded that "visibility % across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric." That's the core of anything you can honestly track.
Two vendors also report directly to site owners. Microsoft's AI Performance report counts citations across Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and select partners, with cited pages and grounding queries. Google's generative AI performance reports, rolled out to all sites by 31 August 2026, count impressions of your URLs in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Neither counts brand mentions that come without a link.
Not trackable: one answer, or one person's session
A single answer is one draw from a range of possible answers, so it can't be tracked or reproduced. Personal context goes further. OpenAI says that "if memory is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant saved memories when rewriting a search query," and that it estimates your location from your IP address (ChatGPT search help). Google's AI Mode can also draw on Gmail and Google Photos for people who opt in to Personal Intelligence. None of that is visible to you or to any tracker.
Which AI Engines Offer an API, and Which Only an App
To track brand mentions at scale, you have to send prompts by machine. As of September 2026, here is what each engine officially offers.
| Engine | Official developer route | Same as the consumer app? | First-party report for site owners |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI's API with the web search tool | Not guaranteed: you pick the model, and it may skip searching | None published |
| Claude | Claude API with the web search tool | Not guaranteed | None published |
| Gemini app | Gemini API with Grounding with Google Search | Not guaranteed | None published |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | None documented | Not applicable | Search Console impressions |
| Perplexity | The Agent API, which replaced Sonar | "Differences in configuration" per Perplexity | None published |
| Microsoft Copilot | Grounding with Bing Search for Azure AI agents | No, a developer building block | Bing Webmaster Tools citations |
Why an API answer isn't the app's answer
An API call is a developer's product, not the one your buyers use. In OpenAI's API, "the model can choose to search the web or not," and the developer sets the model and any user location. Perplexity's API FAQ says its API "uses the same search system as the UI with differences in configuration," and that "the underlying AI model might differ." Researchers treat the two as separate data: the authors of "Don't Measure Once" restricted their ChatGPT analysis to one collection method because mixing API and interface data "would create a methodological inconsistency."
Two more changes are worth knowing. Perplexity's migration page says "Sonar Chat Completions support ended on September 27, 2026," with most old requests now reformulated as Agent API calls. And Microsoft retired the Bing Search APIs on 11 August 2025, pointing developers to Grounding with Bing Search instead.
The practical rule: if you track brand mentions through an API, treat the panel as a trend line. For your most valuable prompts, check the app by hand now and then.
What the terms of service say
Reading the consumer apps by script is a different matter from calling an API. As of September 2026:
- OpenAI. Its Terms of Use, effective 1 January 2026, say you may not "Automatically or programmatically extract data or Output." API use falls under OpenAI's separate Business Terms.
- Anthropic. Its consumer terms bar access "through automated or non-human means, whether through a bot, script, or otherwise," except "via an Anthropic API Key or where we otherwise explicitly permit it."
- Google. Its Terms of Service, effective 30 July 2026, bar "using automated means to access content from any of our services in violation of the machine-readable instructions on our web pages," and google.com's robots.txt disallows
/search, where AI Overviews and AI Mode appear.
This isn't legal advice, and trackers differ in how they work. Some describe reading the app through a browser, some call APIs, and some mix both. Ask any vendor which method it uses for each engine, and how that fits each engine's terms. Our ChatGPT rank tracker roundup lists the other questions to ask.
What "Accurate" Means When You Track Brand Mentions
When you track brand mentions in AI answers, accuracy isn't "the tool saw what my buyer saw." That's impossible. It means the number would come out about the same if someone ran the same panel again, and the report tells you how far it could swing.
A worked example
Plannora is a made-up project management tool. In September it runs 40 unbranded buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, twice each: 40 × 3 × 2 = 240 answers. Plannora is named in 91 of them.
- Rate: 91 ÷ 240 = 37.9%.
- Margin at 95% confidence: 1.96 × √(0.379 × 0.621 ÷ 240) = 0.061, or about 6 points.
- What to report: named in 37.9% of answers, likely between 31.8% and 44.1%.
Why the margin is that wide, and why 40 prompts beat 10 prompts run four times as often for the same number of answers, is worked through in our technical guide to brand mentions in AI answers. If October reads 42%, that's inside September's range, so it isn't proof of a change yet. Comparing two periods needs its own math, which our guide to benchmarking AI search performance walks through. The honest headline for September is "named in about 4 in 10 answers." It is not "#2 in ChatGPT."
Six things an accurate report states
- The sample: prompts × engines × runs, and the total answers.
- The conditions: logged out or unpersonalized, which location, and which engine, mode and model.
- The method: app or API, per engine.
- The dates: the window the answers were pooled over.
- The range: the rate with its margin, not the rate alone.
- The raw answers: an export, so anyone can recount.
A report missing any of these can't be checked, and a number that can't be checked isn't accurate in any useful sense.
How to Start Tracking Brand Mentions This Week
You don't need a paid tool to track brand mentions. You need a fixed method.
- Write 30 buyer prompts without your brand name, with two or three phrasings for your most important buying questions. The free AI Visibility Prompt Kit writes 30 for you.
- Run them in clean sessions. In ChatGPT, a temporary chat can be set to Unpersonalized, which skips memories and custom instructions (OpenAI). Keep one location for every run.
- Log one row per answer: date, engine, prompt, whether you were named, every rival named and every cited URL.
- Add the first-party numbers: Bing's AI Performance report, Search Console's generative AI report and GA4's AI Assistant channel, which Google says excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Pool by month and report a range, using the six points above.
Our guide to tracking brand mentions in AI search turns these steps into a weekly monitoring system, with a recording template and alert rules.
When the panel outgrows a spreadsheet, a paid tracker saves hours; our guide to free and paid ways to track brand mentions compares the options with dated prices. Our GEO measurement guide shows how the rate fits a wider reporting program, and the glossary entry on AI share of voice explains the comparison metric most trackers report.
Rankbox doesn't track brand mentions or citations today, so it won't run this panel for you. It helps with what the panel reveals. Answer-Space Research maps the questions buyers ask AI, and the Citation-Ready Writer drafts source-backed articles for the prompts where rivals get named and you don't. They reach your site through Rankbox's API. The Business plan is $49.50 a month with a 7-day trial: see pricing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you track brand mentions in ChatGPT?
Yes, as a rate. Run a fixed set of buyer prompts many times in clean sessions and count how often ChatGPT names you. You can't track a single answer or any user's personalized view, and as of September 2026 OpenAI offers site owners no citation report.
Why do AI visibility tools show different numbers for the same brand?
Tools differ in prompts, engines, runs per prompt, locations and whether they read the app or call the API. Each of those changes the answers collected. Compare tools only on the same prompts, and ask each for its sample size and margin of error.
Is it against the terms of service to track ChatGPT answers?
Running prompts by hand in the app is normal use. OpenAI's consumer Terms of Use say you may not "Automatically or programmatically extract data or Output," and for automated checks OpenAI's API is the sanctioned route. This isn't legal advice, so ask any tracker how it collects answers.
Does Google Search Console show brand mentions in AI Overviews?
No. Its generative AI performance report shows impressions of your URLs in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It doesn't count brand mentions without a link, and it covers only your own site, so you still need a prompt panel.
How often should you track brand mentions in AI search?
Run your prompt panel weekly and report monthly, pooling the weeks into one reading. Answers shift daily, so weekly swings of a few points are usually noise. Re-baseline after a major model or search-mode change.
Can you track brand mentions in AI search for free?
Yes. A spreadsheet, a clean browser session and 30 prompts cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude by hand. Bing Webmaster Tools, Search Console and GA4 add first-party data at no cost. Paid trackers mainly save time.
